Before you start

This am I a rebound quiz is for one specific situation: you are dating someone who came out of a relationship not long ago, and you want to know whether they are with you, or with you partly to get through the end of something else. It has fourteen questions, takes about three minutes, and you do not need an account or an email address to take it. Answer about the person you are seeing, as things are now.

What this quiz measures

Here, rebound means a new relationship that is still partly working for someone's last breakup, as comfort, as distraction, or as proof that they can still be wanted. For the full definition, see the short answer on what a rebound relationship is. This quiz is about the signs, seen from where you are standing.

The questions fall into five groups. Timing: how soon things started after their breakup, and whether they spent any time on their own in between. The ex: how often they come up and in what tone, whether the breakup sounds processed, how much contact there is, and whether their mood follows the ex's news. Pace: how fast and intense things were at the start. You: whether they reach for you on ordinary days or mostly on bad ones, how much they know about your life, whether they compare you to the ex, and whether plans and introductions are real. Audience: whether the relationship sometimes seems aimed at the ex.

Each answer scores from zero to three, and a higher total means more rebound signs. No single answer decides your result.

The signs of a rebound relationship, explained

Timing is the sign everyone thinks of first, and on its own it is the weakest. How long after a relationship is it considered a rebound? There is no cutoff. Some people finish grieving a relationship long before it officially ends, and others are still in it years later. Timing means most in combination with a second sign: whether they had any stretch of being single at all.

The way the ex comes up says more than how often. Someone who has worked through a breakup can talk about it like a closed chapter, with good parts, bad parts and their own share of what went wrong. Someone in a rebound tends to sound raw, one-sided or vague, or to swing between bitterness and longing.

Speed and intensity are common in rebounds, because relief can feel a lot like falling in love. Fast is not automatically a problem. Fast plus the constant presence of the ex usually is.

Comfort without curiosity is the sign people miss. If they reach for you mostly when they are low or lonely, and know little about your life, you may be filling a gap rather than being known.

The signs you are a rebound also show up in the future and in the people around them. Plans that keep dissolving, being kept apart from friends and family, or the opposite, a relationship performed for an audience that includes the ex, all suggest the relationship is still partly about someone else.

How long do rebound relationships last?

Honestly, nobody knows. You will see figures online claiming that most rebounds fail within a few months, often "90% within three months." We could not find a study behind those numbers, and there is no reliable research on how long rebound relationships last.

The research that does exist paints a more mixed picture than the warnings suggest. In two studies published in 2015 in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, Claudia Brumbaugh and R. Chris Fraley found that people who were in a new relationship after a breakup were more confident in their own desirability and had more resolution about their ex. Among people in new relationships, starting sooner went along with better psychological and relational health. A 2009 study by Stephanie Spielmann, Geoff MacDonald and Anne Wilson found that for anxiously attached people, a new partner, or even the belief that they could easily find one, loosened their attachment to an ex.

Both looked at the person who rebounded rather than the new partner, and neither can tell you what will happen to your relationship. They do suggest that a rebound is not doomed by definition.

So instead of counting months, watch what changes. A rebound that is becoming a relationship shows it in small, visible ways: the ex comes up less often and more calmly, plans reach further ahead, you meet the people in their life, and things hold steady through an ordinary month with nothing exciting going on. If none of that has moved after a few months, the fact that nothing is changing tells you more than the calendar does.

How this differs from nearby quizzes

This quiz asks whether the whole relationship is running partly on their breakup. The is he over his ex quiz looks more narrowly at their feelings for the ex, whatever the timing. If you are not sure the two of you are even in a defined relationship, the am I in a situationship quiz is a better fit. If you are the one who just came out of a relationship and you wonder whether you are rebounding, the am I over my ex quiz looks at it from that side. And if the worry keeps coming back even when the signs look fine, the attachment style quiz can help you see why.

How to read your result

There are four results: probably not a rebound, some rebound signs, likely a rebound for now, and a strong rebound pattern. Each one explains what the pattern means, why rebounds are not automatically doomed, what to say if you want to talk about it, and how to protect yourself while you find out.

Answer for what you actually see, not for what they have promised or what you hope. If an answer falls between two options, pick the one that matches the last few weeks. Your result describes the signs you reported, not what is in their heart, and only a direct, kind conversation can tell you what they want.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do rebound relationships last?

There is no reliable answer. Popular figures, such as claims that 90% of rebounds fail within three months, do not come from any study we could find, and there is no solid research on how long rebound relationships last. Some end once the person feels better, and some turn into lasting relationships. What matters more than the start date is whether they have worked through the last relationship and whether the two of you have talked about it honestly.

How long after a relationship is it considered a rebound?

There is no cutoff. A rebound is defined by what the relationship is doing for someone, not by the calendar. Someone can be genuinely ready a month after a relationship that had ended in their head long before, and someone else can still be rebounding a year later. A start within weeks, with no time spent single in between, is worth a closer look, but timing on its own tells you little.

What are the signs of a rebound relationship?

The clearest signs are about the ex, not the calendar: the ex comes up often and with strong feeling, the breakup still sounds raw or one-sided, and their mood shifts with the ex's news. Other signs are a very fast, intense start, reaching for you mostly on bad days, knowing little about your life, comparing you to the ex, vague plans for the future, and a relationship that sometimes seems aimed at the ex. One or two signs mean little. A pattern means more.

Can a rebound relationship turn into a real relationship?

Yes, some do. In two studies published in 2015, Claudia Brumbaugh and R. Chris Fraley found that people in new relationships after a breakup were more confident in their desirability and more resolved about their ex, and the authors concluded that rebounds may be more beneficial than people usually assume. What gives one the best chance is an honest conversation early, so both of you know what the relationship is. If it holds up through a few ordinary months, a real disagreement and fresh news about the ex, it is standing on its own.

What does it mean when your ex rebounds quickly?

Usually less than it feels like. Some people move on fast because the relationship had ended for them before the breakup did. Others jump into something new to avoid the grief, which can catch up with them later. Either way, a quick rebound says something about how your ex copes, not about how easy you were to replace. It helps to put your attention back on your own recovery rather than on their new relationship.

How do I ask if I am a rebound without starting a fight?

Choose a calm moment, keep it short and make it about you. You could say: "We got together pretty soon after your breakup. Where are you with all of that now? I'm asking because I like you, not to judge." Then listen for whether they can talk about the ex clearly. An honest "I'm still sorting it out" is more reassuring than a quick "You're overthinking it."

Is it bad to be someone's rebound?

Not necessarily. Plenty of people meet someone they care about soon after a breakup, and the feelings can be real on both sides. It becomes a problem when you are carrying the relationship alone, when you are mostly their comfort for someone else, or when the arrangement stays unspoken. Keep your own pace, keep your own life full, and pick a point to check whether the relationship has started to be about the two of you.

Is what I answer here private?

You do not need an account or an email address to take the quiz. Your answers are used to work out your result and are not saved to a profile or shown to anyone. Nobody, including the person you are dating, is notified that you took it.
