How to Respond to 'I Miss You', Even From an Ex

A chat for when you do not know how to respond to 'I miss you'. Say who sent it and what you feel when you read it, and get three replies, from saying it back to a kind no. If it is from an ex, it helps you hold your line. No sign-up.

Tell me who sent it, what they wrote, and where things stand between you: partner, crush, friend, or ex. Then the harder part: what you actually feel when you read it. I will write three replies, from saying it back to a kind no, and if it is an ex, help you hold whatever line you have drawn.

Nothing here sends anything. You are allowed to take a day before you answer.

This is support, not therapy, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger call 911. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Three words, and suddenly you are holding your phone with no idea what to do with your face. "I miss you" is easy to send and hard to answer, because it does not ask a question. It hands you a feeling and waits to see what you do with it.

This chat starts with the two things the message leaves out: who sent it and what you actually feel when you read it. Then it writes three replies, from saying it back to a kind no, and says which one matches you. If it is from an ex, it also helps you hold whatever line you have drawn.

1

Start with what you feel, not what they want

The most common mistake is answering the feeling they sent instead of the one you have. You read "I miss you", reply "miss you too" by reflex, and now you have said something you were not sure about, to someone who will read it as a yes.

Before you type, finish this sentence for yourself: when I read it, I felt... Glad. Tired. Hopeful in a way I do not trust. Guilty. Nothing at all. The reply follows from that, not from what would be easiest to send.

2

Three honest replies

Saying it back. Make it specific, because "miss you too" is the reply everyone sends. I miss you too. The apartment is way too quiet without you singing in the kitchen.

Warm, with a limit. For when you care about them but do not want to move things forward. That is kind of you to say. I think about you too sometimes, and I am still not in a place to pick things back up.

A kind no. For when you do not feel it back. Thank you for telling me. I do not feel the same way, and I would rather be honest with you than vague.

Not: haha same, when it is not the same. Instead: whichever of the three is true.

3

When it comes from a partner or a crush

From a partner who is away, the message is usually an invitation to feel close from a distance. Answer with something they can picture: what you did today, what you want to do together when they are back.

From someone you have only been on a few dates with, it can feel like too much too soon. You do not have to match it. That is sweet. I had a really good time on Saturday and I would like to see you again. That is a real answer, and it does not claim more than you feel.

And if you want to be the one who says it first next time, I miss you texts is for the sending side.

4

When it comes from an ex

"I miss you" from an ex is a feeling, not a plan. On its own it does not say I am sorry, I have changed, or I want to get back together. People miss someone and still would not choose them again. This text also tends to arrive late at night, around holidays, or when something has gone wrong in their life, which says more about the moment than about the two of you.

If you want to know what they mean, you can ask once. What do you want to happen? is a fair question. If you already know you do not want to go back, you do not owe them a conversation about it.

5

If you are in no contact

You do not have to reply. Not replying is an answer, and often the clearest one. If you would rather say something, keep it to one line that closes the door gently: I am glad you are okay. I am not going to be in touch for now, and I would like you to respect that.

Then go back to whatever was keeping you steady. The no contact plan is built for exactly the kind of hour this text tends to arrive in. If you are now tempted to message them yourself, try the should I text my ex quiz first. And if you cannot tell whether you miss them or just miss having someone, the do I miss my ex or am I just lonely quiz is worth five minutes.

6

When "I miss you" is a hook

If the relationship involved control, threats or fear, a warm message after a gap is a common way people get pulled back in. It often comes with promises that things will be different now, or pressure to meet up just once to talk. You do not owe a reply, and you do not owe an explanation for not replying.

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, you can text START to 88788, or chat at thehotline.org. If the message has stirred up thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the US.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you respond to 'I miss you'?

Start with what you actually feel, then pick the reply that matches it. If you miss them too, say so with one specific detail rather than a reflexive 'miss you too'. If you care but do not want to move things forward, be warm and name the limit. If you do not feel it back, say so kindly and plainly. Vague replies feel safer and usually cause more trouble later.

What should I say when my ex says they miss me?

It depends on what you want, not on what they said. If you want to understand, ask once what they want to happen. If you are done, a short, kind line that closes the door is enough, and so is no reply. Avoid replies that keep it open by accident, like 'I miss you sometimes too', unless you mean to start a conversation about getting back together.

Does 'I miss you' from an ex mean they want me back?

Not on its own. Missing someone is a feeling, and people miss partners they would not choose again. The text alone does not say they are sorry, that anything has changed, or what they want next. Nobody can read that from three words, including this chat. If it matters to you, the only way to find out is to ask, once, and decide in advance what answer you need.

Do I have to reply if I am in no contact?

No. Not replying is a complete answer, and often the kindest one to yourself. If you want to say something, one line that wishes them well and says you will not be in touch for now is enough. You do not need to explain the no contact or justify it. If the message shakes you, go back to whatever you set up to get through the hard hours.

Is what I write private? Do I need an account?

No account, no email, no sign-up. What you type goes to the coach so it can write replies and is not stored on this page after you close the tab. Nothing is sent to the person who messaged you, and nothing can be sent from here. Copy any reply you want to keep before you close the tab, because the conversation does not come back.
