Before you start

This marriage compatibility test is for couples who are engaged, thinking about getting engaged, or newly married. Fourteen questions cover the areas that premarital programs spend the most time on: money and debt, children, housework, families and in-laws, faith and values, conflict and repair, affection and sex, career and location, stress, and trust. Every answer also records something most quizzes skip: whether you have actually talked about it. It takes about four minutes, and no email is required to see your result.

1

Who it is for

Answer for the two of you as things are right now, not as you hope they will be after the wedding. If you are already married, read "will" as "do" and treat the test as a check-up on the topics you may have skipped on the way to the altar. If you are not engaged yet, it shows you what to talk about before you are.

2

What it measures

Most compatibility quizzes ask whether you agree. This one also asks whether you know. On every topic, the best answer is that you have talked and you agree, or that you differ and have a plan you both accept. The next is that you have never really discussed it. That scores as an unknown, a gap you cannot see into yet. The highest-scoring answer is a difference you know about and have not resolved, or a pattern that is already hurting you.

Unknowns count because they are where the biggest marriage surprises come from. Many couples assume they agree on kids, money or how often they will see each other's parents, and find out years later that the assumption was only on one side.

Your score adds up the gaps and runs from 0 to 42. A higher score means more unknowns or more unresolved differences. It does not mean less love.

3

Why these topics

Some differences between partners are small and fixable, like who cooks or how tidy the kitchen needs to be. Some last: one of you saves and the other spends, one is close to family and the other likes distance. Couples researcher John Gottman calls lasting differences like these perpetual problems, and most good marriages carry a few. A handful of topics are different again, because they are about direction rather than style. Whether to have children, what faith to raise them in and where to build a life cannot be met halfway. Those are the ones worth settling before a wedding, not after.

That is why the fourteen questions lean toward the areas where unspoken assumptions do the most damage: money, children, families and the way you handle conflict.

4

How it differs from the general compatibility test

The compatibility test for couples is a general look at any relationship, dating or married: how safe you feel getting close, how you talk about hard things, whether you want the same life and how you repair after fights. This marriage compatibility test is narrower and more practical. It is about the decisions a marriage locks in, and whether the two of you have actually made them together.

A few other quizzes go deeper on one area. If arguments are your gap, the conflict style test shows whether avoidance, escalation or weak repair is driving them. If affection is where you differ, the love language quiz is a gentle way into that talk. And if you are married and the real question is whether to keep going, the is my marriage over quiz is built for that.

5

Take it separately, then compare

The test is most useful when each of you takes it alone, without discussing your answers, and then you compare. The questions where you picked different answers often reveal more than either total. If you each believe the other knows your full financial picture, and only one of you is right, that is the conversation to have first.

6

How to read your result

A score of 0 to 8 means a strong foundation: you have talked through most of these topics and largely agree. From 9 to 17 means a solid relationship with a few gaps to close. From 18 to 27 means important gaps worth working through. From 28 up means that many of the big topics are still unknowns or open disagreements.

One rule outweighs the total. If you chose the last answer on children, faith, location or trust, take that question seriously whatever your score. A good average does not cancel a dealbreaker.

Every result comes with specific questions to ask each other next and a short explanation of what premarital counseling involves. If you want more questions to ask before marriage, the questions to ask your partner collection has 150 of them, including sets on conflict and the future.

If you want to talk through a gap before you raise it with your partner, Lovon is an AI relationship coach you talk to by voice. It is support, not therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marriage compatibility test?

A marriage compatibility test is a set of questions about the areas that most shape a marriage, such as money, children, families, faith and conflict, meant to show where two people agree, where they differ and what they have not discussed yet. This one has fourteen questions and takes about four minutes. It is a self-check written by Lovon, not a clinical instrument and not a premarital inventory like PREPARE/ENRICH or FOCCUS, which are usually taken with a trained facilitator. Its job is to tell you which conversations to have next.

Should we take the test together or separately?

Separately works best. Each of you answers alone, without comparing notes, and then you look at both results side by side. The questions where your answers differ are often the most useful part, because they show where one of you assumes something the other does not. Taking it together on one phone tends to produce the answer you agree on out loud, which may not be what either of you actually thinks.

What questions should you ask before marriage?

Start with the topics that are hardest to change once you are married. Do we both want children, and when? What do we each earn, owe and spend, and how will we combine money? Where will we live, and whose career leads if one of us needs to move? How involved will our families be? What role will faith play at home? How does each of us act in a fight, and how do we make up? What counts as crossing a line with someone else? Take one topic per conversation instead of trying to cover everything in one night.

Can a compatibility test predict whether a marriage will last?

No quiz can predict that, and this one does not try. What it can do is show where you have unknowns or unresolved differences, which are things you can act on. Research on premarital preparation points the same way: a large US household survey by Stanley, Amato, Johnson and Markman, published in the Journal of Family Psychology in 2006, found that people who had taken premarital education reported higher marital satisfaction and lower odds of divorce, though the authors noted that a survey cannot prove the education caused the difference.

Is there a marriage compatibility test by date of birth or zodiac sign?

There are plenty online, and they are entertainment. A birth date or a star sign says nothing about whether two people agree on children, money or how to handle a fight, and name or birthday calculators turn your inputs into a percentage that has nothing to do with your actual relationship. This test asks about what you have discussed and decided, which is what really shapes a marriage.

What is premarital counseling, and do we need it?

Premarital counseling is a short series of sessions for couples who are engaged or planning to marry, led by a counselor, a therapist or a trained member of the clergy. Many programs begin with a questionnaire that each partner completes alone, then use the differences to guide the sessions and practice skills like talking about money and resolving conflict. Many churches ask engaged couples to complete some form of marriage preparation, and secular options exist too. You do not need a problem to benefit, but it helps most when hard topics keep stalling at home.

We are already married. Is this test still useful?

Yes. Many couples skip some of these conversations before the wedding, and newly married couples often discover the gaps in the first year or two, around money, housework and in-laws. Read each question in the present tense and use your result as a list of topics to revisit. If you are married and the real question is whether the relationship can continue, the Is My Marriage Over quiz on this site is the closer fit.

Does this test cover faith and religion?

Yes. One question asks how your beliefs fit, including religion, how you would practice it and the values you want at the center of family life, and another asks how you would raise children, which includes faith. The test works for religious and non-religious couples, and for couples of different faiths. If faith is central to your marriage, your church or community may also offer a faith-based premarital program that goes deeper on that side.
