Frequently Asked Questions
How do I tell if I am too dependent in a relationship?
Look at what happens when your partner is unavailable rather than when they are around. Three checks cover most of it. Does your mood stay low until you can reach them? Do your own decisions, even small ones, wait for their view? And is there anyone besides them you would call on a bad night? One of these on its own is ordinary, especially in a hard month. Several together, lasting months, is what this test calls overdependence, and your result tells you which part is carrying it.
How do I know if I have dependent personality disorder?
This test cannot tell you, and no online quiz can. Dependent personality disorder can only be assessed by a qualified clinician, and it describes a long-standing pattern across a whole life and many relationships, not one. It involves real difficulty making everyday decisions, needing others to take charge of major areas of life, and fear of being unable to cope alone, to a degree that gets in the way of work and daily life. If that sounds like every relationship you have had rather than this one, it is worth raising with a doctor or a psychologist. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis.
What are some signs that my relationship is in trouble?
From the dependency side, a few are worth watching. One person's world has narrowed to the relationship while the other's has not. Decisions have stopped being shared and started being handed over. Reassurance stops working within a day and has to be repeated. Small arguments carry an outsized weight, because the relationship has become the only place either of you feels held. Signs of a different kind matter more: if your partner discourages your friendships, controls money or reacts badly when you act on your own, that is control rather than dependency, and the healthy relationship quiz is a better place to start.
Is emotional dependency always bad?
No. Some reliance on a partner is the point of a close relationship. Healthy dependency means turning to them when things go wrong and trusting they will turn up, while still being able to settle yourself, make your own choices and lean on other people too. The problem is not leaning. It is having nothing else to lean on.
What is the difference between emotional dependency and codependency?
They point in opposite directions. Codependency is organized around the other person's needs: caretaking, fixing their problems, feeling worthwhile through being needed. Emotional dependency is organized around your own needs: relying on one person to settle your moods, make or approve your decisions, and be your main support. People can have both, and the two often appear in the same relationship from opposite sides. The am I codependent quiz measures the first, and this test measures the second.
Is what I answer here private?
You do not need an account, and no email is required to see your result. The result page offers to send you a copy, and you can skip it. Your answers are used to work out the result on this page. They are not saved to a profile or shown to anyone else. If you want to see whether things change, take it again in a couple of months and compare which part comes out highest.
