Nothing here sends anything. One specific memory does more than three paragraphs of adjectives.

An anniversary message has a different job from a birthday message. A birthday is about one person. An anniversary is about the two of you and the time you have spent together, which means the best material is not how you feel today. It is what happened.

That is why most anniversary cards sound alike. Happy anniversary to my best friend, I love you more every day. True, probably. Also something anyone married for any number of years could write. The card that gets kept says something only these two people lived through.

This tool asks for four things. How many years. How you met. One hard stretch you got through together. And one ordinary thing you love about them, the kind of thing that would never make it into a speech. From that it writes a card message, a longer letter and a short text, and tells you what to leave out.

1

The four details that do the work

How you met gives you a beginning. It does not need to be a good story. You were the guy who kept borrowing my pen in statistics. That is enough.

The hard stretch is what gives an anniversary message weight. Most couples past the first year have one: a move, a layoff, an illness, the year with the newborn, the months you barely talked. Naming it, gently, tells them you know what the years actually cost.

The ordinary thing keeps it from sounding like a speech. The way he warms up your side of the car in winter. The way she says your name right before she tells you something funny. Small and specific beats grand and vague.

The year count is the frame. A first anniversary and a twentieth want different things.

2

Before and after

Before: Happy anniversary to the love of my life. Here's to many more years together.

After: Seven years ago you spilled coffee on my notes and then rewrote them by hand. Since then we have moved three times, got through the year your dad was sick, and you still make the coffee every morning. Happy anniversary. I would choose this again.

The second one has a beginning, a hard stretch, an ordinary thing, and a closing line. That is the whole structure, and it works at almost any length.

3

First anniversary or twentieth

The first anniversary is mostly about the beginning. You still remember the early months clearly, and the message can be playful, a little amazed that it has already been a year.

Later anniversaries are about staying and choosing. After ten or twenty years, the line people remember is usually some version of: we went through that, and I would still choose you. That is not less romantic than the first year. It is a different kind of romantic, and usually a more believable one.

4

Card, letter or text

The card message is what they will keep, possibly for decades. A few sentences, and at least one of them specific.

The letter is for when there is more to say: a milestone year, a year after something hard, or a partner who would treasure a page in your handwriting. If it helps, write it in four short parts. The beginning, the hard part, what you love now, and what you are looking forward to. If it keeps growing past an anniversary note, how to write a love letter is built for the full page.

The short text is for the morning, or for an anniversary you spend apart. One or two lines, sent early.

5

What to leave out

Inside jokes in a card that will sit on a shelf where guests can read it, unless you are happy explaining them. Lines like despite everything, or even after all we have been through, which can read as a complaint wrapped in a compliment. Promises about the future that sound like a deal. Comparisons to other couples. And anything about how hard you have worked to make it last, because an anniversary is shared, not scored.

6

When the anniversary does not feel happy

Sometimes an anniversary lands in a bad stretch, and writing something glowing feels like lying. You do not have to force it. A shorter, honest message can be kinder than a sweet one you do not mean. Happy anniversary. This year has been hard on us, and I am still here, and I still want to work on it.

If the relationship is in real trouble, a card is not where it gets fixed. Relationship check-in questions give you a way to talk about where the two of you actually are. If you are trying to decide whether to stay, the stay or leave pressure test is built for that question. And if you are afraid of your partner, you do not owe them a sweet message. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, and you can text START to 88788.

If what you want to say is about one person rather than the two of you, birthday messages for your partner are the closer fit. Writing for your parents' anniversary works here too. Tell the chat who it is for, and it will write from the outside, warmer and shorter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I write in an anniversary card for my husband or wife?

A beginning, a hard stretch, and an ordinary thing. One line about how you met, one about something you got through together, one small thing you still love about them, and a closing line. Seven years ago you spilled coffee on my notes, and you still make the coffee every morning, says more than a page about soulmates. Keep it to a few sentences, and leave private jokes out of a card guests might read.

How do I write an anniversary message that does not sound generic?

Use something only the two of you lived through. Generic messages are about love in general. Specific ones are about the apartment with the broken heater, the year with the newborn, or the way they hum when they cook. One concrete detail does more than three adjectives. If you are stuck, start with how you met and the hardest thing you got through, and build the rest around those two.

What should a first anniversary message say?

Mostly the beginning, and a little amazement that it has already been a year. The early months are still vivid, so use them: the first date that went wrong, the moment you knew. Keep it light and warm rather than solemn. Avoid big promises about the decades ahead, which can feel heavy at one year. A first anniversary card can be playful, and that is part of what makes it feel true.

What do I write if our relationship is going through a hard time?

Something short and honest instead of something glowing. This year has been hard on us, and I am still here, and I still want to work on it, is more respectful than a card that pretends nothing is wrong. Do not use the card to raise the problems, either. If things are serious, have that conversation on another day, and use the card only to say you are still showing up.

Do you save what I type, or do I need an account?

No account, no email, no sign-up. What you type goes to the coach to write the messages and is not stored on this page once you close the tab. Nothing is sent to your partner, and nothing can be sent from here. Copy the card message and the letter before you leave, because closing the tab loses the whole conversation.
