Should I Send This Text?

Almost every text that is hard to send is doing two jobs at once. There is the surface job: a question about the weekend, a link, an apology, a photo you found. Underneath it is the real request. Come back. Tell me you still think about me. Admit you were wrong.

The second one is why you cannot press send. It is also usually the one they answer, because people read intent fine even when it is buried under a casual opener. Once both are written down in front of you, the question of whether to send it often answers itself.

When you are hurting, drafts grow. First the thing you want to say. Then context for it. Then a defense of the context. Then a softening line so the defense does not sound harsh. Every addition hands the other person somewhere else to go that is not your point.

Cut it to three lines. One thing that happened, one thing you want, one place to stop. If it will not fit in three lines, you want a conversation, not a text. If cutting it makes you feel exposed, notice that. The extra words were armor, not clarity.

The urge to send peaks and then drops. Twenty minutes is usually enough for it to stop feeling like an emergency, and the version of you on the other side of those twenty minutes gets a vote too. Waiting is not losing. It is not a strategy either, and it does not mean you never send it. It means you send it as a choice instead of as relief. One thing the tool cannot do is tell you what they will do. It has never met them and it has never seen a word they wrote. It has your words and nothing else, so anything it says about the other person is a guess and gets labeled as one.
