Frequently Asked Questions
Should I get back with my ex?
Only if the thing that ended it has really changed, and you can point to how. A second try tends to go well when both of you can name your own part, you trust them and feel like yourself around them, and they want it as clearly as you do. If the plan is mostly to try harder at the same relationship, the most likely outcome is the same ending.
Is getting back with an ex a good idea?
It can be, but often it is not. Getting back together is common, yet in research by René Dailey and colleagues, partners in on-again, off-again relationships reported fewer positives and more problems than couples who never split, and more renewals went with more problems. It tends to be a good idea when the breakup was about circumstances or the problem has genuinely been worked on, and a poor one when nothing has changed except how lonely you feel.
How many times is too many to break up and get back together?
There is no magic number, but each round deserves more skepticism than the last. In a national study of cohabiting and married couples, Amber Vennum and colleagues found that partners who had already broken up and renewed were at greater risk of doing it again, and were more uncertain and less satisfied. If you have split three or more times over the same issue, another try needs real change, not another reset.
Should I get back with my ex if I still love them?
Love is a reason to think about it, not a reason to go back on its own. Plenty of people still love someone the relationship was not good for, and feelings can outlast a breakup by months. Ask whether the reason it ended has changed and whether you feel like yourself around them. If both answers are no, the love is something to grieve, not a plan.
How long should you wait before getting back with an ex?
There is no research-backed waiting period, and rules about a set number of days come from online advice. What matters more is deciding after the first raw weeks, when you can think about the relationship without the panic of the breakup, and after you have seen whether anything has actually changed. A few weeks of space and then a slow start, if you both want it, usually works better than a reunion on the first lonely weekend.
What if I want them back but they do not want me back?
Then the honest answer is that you cannot make them, and any method that promises otherwise is selling hope. You can tell them once, clearly and without pressure, and then respect what they say. After that, the work is grieving the relationship and taking space, not finding the perfect text.
What if I was afraid of my ex?
If you were ever afraid of them, or they controlled, threatened or hurt you, that is a reason not to go back, whatever else this quiz says. Talk to someone you trust before any contact. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at thehotline.org can help you think through safety, confidentially.
Is what I answer here private?
You do not need an account or an email address to take the quiz. Your answers are used to work out your result and are not saved to a profile or shown to anyone. Nobody, including your ex, is notified that you took it.
