Love Tester

The love meter from the old arcades, on your phone. Add two names if you like, grab the handle and squeeze as fast as you can for five seconds. Then try to beat your score.

How to play Love Tester

Your goal

Light up as many bulbs as you can, from Cold Fish at the bottom to Uncontrollable! at the top.

  • Add two names, if you like

Yours and theirs. They set half of the score, and the same pair always gets the same chemistry.

  • Squeeze for 5 seconds

After 3, 2, 1, tap Squeeze! as fast as you can. About 40 taps lights every bulb. On a computer, use the space bar.

  • Read the machine

The bulbs climb as you tap. Then you get a percentage, a level and the machine’s verdict.

  • Beat it, then send it

Squeeze again to beat your best, then share your score with them.

Just for fun: the machine knows nothing about your relationship.

Love testers have stood in arcades and on boardwalk piers for about a hundred years. You put in a coin, gripped a metal handle, and a column of lights climbed through labels like Cold Fish, Harmless, Passionate and Hot Stuff. Some machines measured how hard you squeezed, some how sweaty your palm was, a few sent a mild buzz through the handle. None of them measured love, and that was never the point. The point was the friend next to you laughing when the needle stopped at Clammy.

1

How to play

Type your name and the name of the person you are thinking about, or leave both empty. Press Grab the handle, wait for the countdown, then tap Squeeze as fast as you can until the five seconds run out. On a computer the space bar works too. The bulbs light up as you go, and the machine gives its verdict when time is up.

2

How the love meter scores you

Without names, the reading is your squeeze alone: about forty taps in five seconds lights every bulb. With two names, half of the reading is the squeeze and half is a chemistry number worked out from the names, the way a love calculator by name works. The same two names always get the same chemistry, in either order, so you can compare squeezes fairly. Your best score stays on this device so you have something to beat.

3

Love tester or love calculator?

A love calculator turns two names into a percentage and stops there. The arcade love tester was a game of effort: you could not change your name, but you could squeeze harder. This one does both, which is why a strong squeeze can rescue a modest pair of names and a weak one can sink a great pair. Neither half knows anything about the two of you.

When you want a real answer

If you are playing because you are actually wondering how you feel about someone, a machine will not tell you. The Love Test asks twelve questions about one person over the past month and scores longing, closeness and staying power separately. Am I in Love? is a shorter gut check for a new crush. And if the feeling is complicated, Lovon is an AI relationship coach you can talk it through with by voice, at any hour. It is support, not therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the love tester accurate?

No, and no love tester ever was. The arcade machines measured grip, sweat or nothing at all, and this one measures how fast you tap plus a number made from two names. It is a game for a laugh with a friend or a crush. For a real read on your own feelings, the Love Test quiz asks about your actual experience of one person.

How does the love tester work?

You tap Squeeze as fast as you can for five seconds. Without names, your taps alone set the reading, and about forty taps lights every bulb. With two names, half the reading comes from your taps and half from a chemistry number made from the names, which is always the same for the same pair.

What do the love meter levels mean?

There are ten, bottom to top: Cold Fish, Clammy, Mild, Harmless, Warm, Flirty, Passionate, Burning, Hot Stuff and Uncontrollable. They follow the labels painted on old arcade love testers, and each comes with a one-line verdict from the machine.

Can I use it as a love calculator by name?

Yes. Type two names and the machine works out a chemistry number from them, the way a name love calculator does, then adds your squeeze. The chemistry part is the same every time for the same two names in either order, so only the squeeze changes between tries.

How do I get Uncontrollable?

Squeeze without names and tap about forty times in five seconds, or about eight taps a second. Two thumbs help. With names, you also need a pair whose chemistry is near the top, so some pairs can only reach Hot Stuff however fast you tap.

Can I share my score?

Yes. After the reading, press Share result. On a phone it opens the share menu so you can send it in a chat or post it; on a computer it copies the result and a link to the game, so the other person can try to beat it.
