Write a Letter to Your Best Friend

A chat for a letter to your best friend that only they could have received. Tell it how long you have been friends, one moment that defined it, and the occasion, and get a full letter, a long text paragraph and a short note in your words. No sign-up.

Tell me how long you have been friends, one moment that made this friendship what it is, and what the message is for: a birthday, a wedding, a move, or no reason at all. If something big is going on in their life right now, mention that too. I will write it in your words, in three lengths.

Nothing is sent from here. Pick the length that fits, then add one detail only you would know.

This is support, not therapy, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger call 911. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are afraid of a partner, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

Most paragraphs for a best friend sound the same. Sister from another mister. Through thick and thin. I do not know what I would do without you. Your friend has seen that paragraph under twelve other people's birthday photos this year, and it slides right past. What makes yours land is one detail that only the two of you have.

This tool is a conversation. Tell it how long you have been friends, a moment that defined the friendship, what the message is for, and anything big going on in their life right now. It writes three versions in your words: a letter, a long text paragraph, and a short note for a card or a gift. Where a memory would carry a sentence and you have not given it one, it leaves a bracket instead of inventing a road trip you never took.

1

One moment, told properly

The whole message hangs on a single specific scene. Not a summary of the friendship, a scene.

Not: You have always been there for me through everything.

Instead: You sat on my kitchen floor the night I lost the job, ate cereal out of the box with me, and did not once say everything happens for a reason.

Not: We have so many memories together.

Instead: I still think about the gas station in Utah where we got lost for three hours and you made me rank every song on the radio.

If nothing comes to mind, start with a place. A dorm room, a car, a bar that closed. The memory is usually attached to it.

2

Say what they are to you now

A list of old memories reads like a eulogy for the friendship. The part people remember is what you see in them today. What you admire about how they handled this year. What they are like with their kid. The thing they are better at than they know.

If something big is happening for them, a new city, a wedding, a divorce, a health scare, a first baby, name it. A letter that ignores the biggest thing in their life reads as if it was written for someone else.

3

Pick the length for the occasion

A birthday paragraph for a text or a caption works best at four to six sentences: the scene, what they are to you now, and a plain line to close. A letter suits the bigger moments, like a wedding, a move across the country, or the end of a hard year, and can run to a page. A short note of one or two sentences is for a card, a gift, or a random Tuesday.

The random Tuesday version is often the one that gets kept. There is no occasion for it to compete with, so the only reason you sent it is that you meant it.

4

Private or public

If you are posting it, cut the inside jokes that need a footnote and anything they would not want their coworkers to read. If it is private, keep every one of them. The best private letters are almost unreadable to anyone else, and that is the point.

5

What to leave out

An apology for being a bad friend lately, slipped into a birthday message, turns the message into one about you. So does "we do not talk as much as we used to", which lands as a small complaint on a day that is meant to be theirs. If you owe them a real apology, write that separately. The apology letter is built for that one. If the two of you have drifted and you want to close the gap, start with how to reconnect with an old friend rather than a big emotional letter out of nowhere.

Comparisons to other friends do not belong either. My best friend, unlike some people, is a compliment with a shot at someone else inside it.

6

When your friend is going through something hard

A letter in a hard season is a different thing. Do not promise it will get better, do not tell them to stay positive, and do not ask them to reply. Say what you see, say you are around, and offer something concrete. What to say to someone going through a hard time goes deeper on that. If your friend has talked about hurting themselves, a letter is not the right step. Reach them today, and point them to 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, by call or text in the US.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I write in a letter to my best friend?

Build it around one specific moment, told with the place and the details, then say what they are to you now, not just back then. If something big is happening in their life, name it. Close with a plain line rather than a big declaration. Leave out apologies and complaints about how often you talk, which pull the focus onto you. One real scene does more than a page of best friend phrases.

How long should a paragraph for my best friend be?

For a birthday text or a caption, four to six sentences is about right: one memory, what they mean to you now, and a short closing line. Longer than that and it starts to read like a speech in a text box. Save a full page for a letter on a bigger occasion, like a wedding or a move. The coach gives you a letter, a paragraph and a short note so you can pick.

Can I post it, or should it stay private?

Both work, but they are written differently. A public post should lose the inside jokes that need explaining and anything they would not want their family or coworkers to read. A private message can keep every one of them, and usually should. Tell the coach where it is going and it will adjust. If you are unsure, send the long version privately and post a shorter one.

What if we have drifted and it feels awkward to write something emotional?

Then a long emotional letter out of nowhere can feel like a lot to receive. Start smaller. A short message built on one specific memory, with no apology for the gap and no pressure to reply, usually opens the door better. The how to reconnect with an old friend tool on this site is made for exactly that first message. You can write the bigger letter once you are talking again.

Is what I write saved, or do I need an account?

No account, no email, no sign-up. What you type goes to the coach to write the message and is not stored on this page once you close the tab. Nothing is sent to your friend or anyone else, and there is no send button. Copy the version you like before you close the tab, because the conversation is gone once you do. You can leave names out entirely.
