Nothing here sends anything. Keep questions out of a goodnight text and save them for the morning.

This is support, not therapy, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger call 911. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are afraid of a partner, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

A goodnight text is the last thing they read before the screen goes dark. That gives it more weight than its length suggests. A good one lets the day end softly. A careless one, or one with a question buried in it, can keep someone awake for an hour.

Most lists treat goodnight texts as good morning texts with one word changed. They are a different job. The morning is about the day ahead. The night is about the day that just happened, and about anything left unfinished between you.

So this tool asks two things. How the day went, for them and for you. And whether anything is still unresolved tonight, from a sharp comment at dinner to a real fight. Then it writes five goodnight texts that fit, a longer paragraph, and a version for a night when things are not okay.

1

Write from the day you actually had

Before: Goodnight babe, sweet dreams.

After: You handled your mom's call better than I would have. Go to sleep, you earned it. Night.

The first is fine. The second tells them you noticed something they did today and that you knew it was hard. Noticing is most of what a goodnight text can do. It does not have to be romantic to be loving.

It can be about your day too. I had a long one and the best part was ten minutes on the phone with you. That is a complete goodnight text, and it asks for nothing back.

2

Keep questions out of it

A question at eleven at night is a small job. Are we still on for Saturday? Did you ever call the landlord? Each one turns the goodnight into an errand, and if they are half asleep, the unanswered question sits there until morning.

Save logistics for daylight. A goodnight text should be something they can read, smile at, and put the phone down.

3

Long distance and different bedtimes

In different time zones, someone always goes to bed first. The one going to sleep can leave a text for the one still awake. I am out, but I wanted the last thing I did today to be this. The one still up can send something for the morning instead of something that needs a reply now.

Long-distance couples often fall into a nightly call that runs long and ends flat because both people are tired. A short text after the call, with the one thing you forgot to say, often does more than another twenty minutes on the phone. If being apart is the main feeling, I miss you texts are written for that.

4

The night after a fight

This is where goodnight texts matter most and go wrong most often. The temptation is to use the last message of the day to win the argument, restart it gently, or fish for whether they are still angry.

Do none of those. A goodnight text after a fight has one job: to say the relationship is still here, even though the problem is not solved yet.

Before: Goodnight. I still think you were out of line but whatever.

After: I'm still upset, and I don't want to go to sleep without saying I love you. We can talk tomorrow.

No relitigating, no apology you do not mean, no demand for an answer. If you do owe an apology, it deserves its own message, and the apology text writer is for that. If you need a night or two to cool off without it sounding like the end, how to ask for space without breaking up helps with the wording.

If a fight left you afraid, not just upset, that is different. You do not owe anyone a sweet message to keep the peace. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, and you can text START to 88788. If you or your partner has talked about self-harm or not wanting to be alive, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

5

Sweet, cute or romantic

Use the register you actually use. Cute goodnight texts are short and a little silly. Night. Tell your pillow I said hi, it gets more of you than I do. Sweet ones are plain. I am lucky. Goodnight. Romantic ones can run longer, but they still work better with one real detail than with a string of words about stars and dreams.

A goodnight paragraph is for the nights that deserve one: the end of a big week, the night before something they are nervous about, the first night apart after a visit. Three or four sentences is plenty. Say what you noticed, say how you feel, and stop before it becomes a letter.

6

What not to send at night

Anything that needs an answer before they can sleep on it. We need to talk. Are you mad at me? Why did you go quiet earlier? Screenshots of something someone said about them. A long paragraph you wrote while upset, because tone is hardest to read at midnight and easiest to misread.

And do not send goodnight as a test of whether they will say it back. If you notice yourself watching the screen after sending it, the text was a question, and that question is worth looking at by itself. Good morning texts are the other end of the same habit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sweet goodnight text for my girlfriend or boyfriend?

One built from today. Goodnight, sweet dreams is fine, but you handled your mom's call better than I would have, go sleep, is the one they will remember. Mention something they did, something that happened, or the best part of your own day. Keep it to a line or two, and leave out any question they would have to answer before they can put the phone down. The same works for a husband or a wife.

What should I text goodnight after a fight?

Something that says the relationship is still here without reopening the argument. I'm still upset, but I don't want to sleep without saying I love you. We can talk tomorrow. Do not restate your side, do not apologize for something you do not feel sorry for, and do not ask whether they are still mad. If you do owe an apology, send it as its own message, not tucked into a goodnight.

Is it clingy to text goodnight every night?

Not if you both enjoy it. A nightly text can be a small, steady ritual, especially in long distance. It gets heavy when one person tracks it, or when a missing goodnight starts a fight. Check what it means to you: if a night without one leaves you anxious rather than just a little disappointed, the text has become reassurance you are asking for, and that is worth talking about directly.

What should a goodnight paragraph for her or him say?

Three or four sentences, sent on a night that deserves more than a line. Say one thing you noticed about them today or this week, one plain sentence about how you feel, and something small to look forward to. Leave out plans and questions, because they turn a goodnight into a to-do list. A paragraph written while you are upset is not a goodnight paragraph, so save that one for the morning.

Do you save what I type, or do I need an account?

No account, no email, no sign-up. What you type goes to the coach to write the texts and is not stored on this page once you close the tab. Nothing is sent to your partner, and nothing can be sent from here. Copy the ones you like before you leave, because closing the tab loses the whole conversation.
