Tell me what your partner did lately, what they doubt about themselves right now, and what you think they need to hear. I will write ten affirmations about them, not about partners in general, and mark which ones to say out loud.

Words of affirmation is one of the five love languages in Gary Chapman's framework: love expressed through what you say, out loud or in writing. Search for examples and you get long lists. I am proud of you. You are an amazing mother. Thank you for all you do. Those lines are not wrong. They are unfinished, and for someone who registers love through words, unfinished is close to silence.

This tool asks three things: what your partner did lately, what they doubt about themselves, and what you think they need to hear. It writes ten affirmations about this specific person, sorted into effort, character and how they love. It marks two to say out loud and one to write down so they can keep it, and names the generic lines to skip in your situation.

1

Why the lists do not land

A partner who runs on words is usually a close reader of them. They notice the difference between a sentence written about them and one that could have been said to anyone. Generic praise does not register as praise. It registers as someone filling a quota.

Not: You are a great dad. Instead: The way you got down on the floor and let Maya explain the whole plot of her drawing, all eleven minutes of it, is the kind of dad I hoped you would be.

Not: Thank you for everything you do. Instead: Thank you for calling the insurance company on Friday. I know you hate the phone, and you did it so I would not have to.

The second line in each pair takes ten more seconds to say. It proves you noticed what happened and what it cost them, and that is the part that sticks.

2

Three kinds worth mixing

Effort is what they did and what it took. People hear thank you constantly. They rarely hear someone name the cost. I saw how tired you were, and you still made dinner and asked about my day.

Character is who they are when nobody is grading them. You are the most honest person I know, even when it costs you. These are the ones people carry for years, because they describe something that does not change with a bad week.

How they love is what they do for you or for other people. You always text my mom on her birthday, even though she was awful to you at the start. Naming the way someone loves tells them it is not invisible.

Most people default to one kind, usually effort, because it is the easiest to see. Mixing all three keeps affirmation from sounding like a performance review.

3

Speak to the doubt, with evidence

The most useful affirmations go where your partner is unsure of themselves. If he thinks he has been a bad provider since the layoff, compliments about his looks will miss. If she thinks she is failing at work, telling her she is beautiful answers a question she did not ask.

The trick is evidence, not argument. You are not a failure is an argument, and people with a doubt are very good at winning arguments against themselves. You stayed until nine on Thursday so your team would not miss the deadline, and two of them thanked you in the group chat is evidence. It is much harder to wave away.

If your partner is in a hard stretch right now, like a lost job, a failed exam or months of burnout, and needs someone on their side more than a list of what you admire, words of encouragement for him is built for that moment.

4

Out loud, in writing, and timing

Some affirmations need to be said face to face, with eye contact and no phone in the room. Those are usually the character ones. Some work better written down, on a card or a note tucked in a bag, because a person who runs on words often rereads them on bad days. The chat marks which is which in your list.

Timing matters as much as wording. Affirmation that arrives right after a fight, with the fight never mentioned, can read as an attempt to skip the repair. Affirmation that only arrives when you want something reads as payment. The ones that work arrive on ordinary days, attached to something real, with nothing requested behind them.

5

What to skip

Affirmations about looks only. Nice to hear, but on their own they do not answer much, and they age badly as the only kind.

Comparisons to other people. You are so much better than my ex is a compliment with someone else standing in it.

Affirmations with a hook. You are such a good listener, so can you listen to this. The hook cancels the compliment.

And anything you do not believe. A person who runs on words hears insincerity quickly, and one hollow line casts doubt on the true ones.

If you are not sure words are what lands for your partner, the love language quiz sorts that out in two minutes, and the Words of Affirmation result explains what this need looks like from the inside. If you want ready-made lines sorted by moment, things to say to your partner has 120 of them. Love languages are a useful vocabulary rather than settled science, and this page is not affiliated with Chapman or the official assessment.

The chat has only your side, so it cannot diagnose your partner or tell you what they feel. If they have talked about hurting themselves or not wanting to be here, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is there for them and for you: call or text 988.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are some examples of words of affirmation?

The strongest ones name something specific. Thank you for handling the call with the landlord, I know you hated it. I love how you talk to my dad like he is your friend. You were brave in that meeting today. Each one ties the compliment to something real that happened. Generic versions like I am proud of you or you are amazing are a start, but they land much harder with one detail attached.

What are good words of affirmation for him?

Ones about his effort and his character, not only how he looks. Name something he did and what it took: you stayed calm with the kids when I could not, and it changed the whole evening. Then name something he is: you are the steadiest person I know. Plenty of partners hear thanks for tasks and rarely hear what someone admires in them, so a sentence about who he is often lands hardest.

What are good words of affirmation for her?

Ones that match what she is unsure about right now. If she doubts herself at work, name a specific thing she handled well there. If she feels stretched thin as a parent, name a moment she got right with the kids. Compliments about her looks are welcome but answer a question she may not be asking. Say one out loud, write one down, and attach each to something that actually happened.

How do I give words of affirmation if it does not come naturally?

Start by noticing, not by speaking. For a week, write down one thing your partner does each day that you appreciate, with the detail. At the end of the week you have seven specific affirmations ready, and most of the hard part is done. Say one a day, plainly, in your own words. It will feel awkward at first. Awkward and specific beats smooth and generic for a partner who runs on words.

Can words of affirmation be used in an unhealthy way?

Yes. Words that never turn into behavior are a pattern worth noticing, especially a flood of compliments after a fight in place of any change. Affirmation that only arrives when someone wants something works the same way. Healthy affirmation is steady, attached to real things, and matched by how the person treats you. If kind words reliably follow behavior that frightens you, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.
