Why Choose Lovon?

A situationship is not defined by how much you like the person or how often you see them. It is defined by an absence: nobody has said what this is. You can spend four nights a week together, know how they take their coffee and which of their coworkers they cannot stand, and still have no shared answer to the question of what happens next. That gap is the whole thing.

The word is recent and the arrangement is not. What is new is how little forces the question anymore, so it can go unasked for months while both people quietly assume different things.

1

Situationship or relationship: what actually separates them

The line is agreement, not intensity. A relationship has a version of events both people would recognize if you asked them separately. A situationship has two private versions that have never been compared.

That is why the usual signs are behavioral rather than emotional. Do plans exist more than a day out. Have you met the people who matter to them. Does the future include you by default. Feelings run high in both kinds of connection, which is exactly why feelings are a poor way to tell them apart.

2

Why they last longer than anyone intends

Because the alternative to asking is not losing them, it is not knowing yet, and not knowing feels survivable. While nothing has been said, nothing has been refused. That logic can hold a person in place for a year.

Inconsistency also makes things stickier rather than looser. Warmth that arrives unpredictably captures more attention than warmth that arrives reliably, which is why the least defined connections are often the hardest to stop thinking about. If you find yourself reading a lot into small signals, the pattern in do they like me covers what those signals can and cannot tell you.

3

How to get out of one, in either direction

There are only two exits and both start the same way: someone says what they want. "I want something that is not ambiguous, and I want to know if you do too." Ask in daylight, early in an evening, not at the end of a night out. Then stop talking and let the answer be whatever it is.

Decide beforehand what you will do with a no, because deciding in the moment usually means accepting less than you wanted and calling it patience. If it does end, it tends to hurt out of proportion to how defined it was, partly because there is no obvious thing to grieve. That is normal, and am I over my ex applies just as well to a person you never officially dated.

If you want to think it through out loud first, Lovon is a private voice AI companion for relationship questions, available any hour, developed with PhD psychologists. It is not a replacement for a licensed therapist.

If you already know what it is and the question is whether to keep going, that is the breakup quiz.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a situationship and a relationship?

A relationship has been agreed to out loud; a situationship has not. That is the whole difference, and it matters more than how it feels day to day. Two people can sleep over four nights a week, know each other's routines and still have no shared answer to what happens next, because nobody has said it. The test is not intensity. It is whether you both know the same thing.

How long is too long for a situationship?

There is no fixed number, but most people form a private opinion about where a connection is going somewhere between two and four months. Past that, the ambiguity is usually being maintained rather than discovered. The more useful measure than time is movement: if this month looks the same as month two, more months will not change it on their own. Something has to be said.

Do situationships ever turn into relationships?

Often, but almost never by drifting. They convert when one person says what they want and the other one agrees, which means the conversation you are avoiding is the mechanism, not the risk to it. What rarely works is waiting to be chosen, or hoping consistent availability will eventually be noticed and rewarded. Being easy to be with does not by itself produce a decision.

How do I ask what we are without scaring them off?

State what you want instead of asking them to define things. "I like this and I want to keep seeing you, and I want to know if we are heading somewhere exclusive" is one sentence, and it is not an ultimatum. Ask in person or on a call, early in an evening rather than at 1 a.m., and then stop talking. Someone who wants the same thing is usually relieved you said it first.

Do I have to sign up to see my result?

No. Your result appears as soon as you answer the last question, with no account and no email. Your answers stay in your browser rather than on our servers, which is also why you can close the tab partway and come back to the same place on that device. Nothing is held back behind a form, and the full result is what you see the first time.
