Before you start

This respect in love test looks at your side of respect in a relationship: whether you still admire the person you love, whether you let them run their own life, and whether you keep your own self-respect while loving them. It takes twelve questions about the past month, four for each of those three parts, and shows which one is holding and which one is wearing thin. It takes about three minutes, and no email is required to see your result.

1

Do you need respect to love someone?

You can feel love for someone you do not respect, at least for a while. Love is a feeling, and feelings are stubborn. But a relationship runs on how you behave toward each other, and that is where respect lives. Without it, love tends to turn into something else: contempt and irritation on one side, control dressed up as care, or a version of love in which one person slowly disappears.

So this test does not ask how much you love your partner. It asks what you did in the past month that showed respect, or showed it slipping, in three directions.

2

The three parts this test scores

Admiration. Whether you still think well of your partner and show it: saying what you admire about them, describing them fairly to other people, and seeing a mistake as a mistake rather than as proof of their character. Eye-rolling, sighing and "you always" are the early signs of it fading.

Room. Whether you let your partner run their own life: their choices, their friends, their way of doing things. Correcting them mid-task, deciding for both of you, and checking their phone or location are the signs of room being taken away.

Self-respect. Whether you hold on to your own standing in the relationship: saying when something hurts, not apologizing for what was not yours, keeping your own plans and asking plainly for what you need.

3

Why your side of it

The more common question is whether your partner respects you. That matters, and the partner respect test on this site asks it. But respect is usually mutual. It tends to run both ways or fade both ways, and the half you can actually change is your own.

Looking at your side is also uncomfortable, which is part of why it is useful. People who take this test often find that one part is fine and another is not: plenty of admiration and very little room, or a lot of room for the partner and not much left for themselves.

4

How this differs from the nearby quizzes

The partner respect test asks the same kind of questions about how your partner behaves toward you: your voice, your limits and how they speak about you. Am I a red flag? is a wider self-check on jealousy, conflict, boundaries and repair. The relationship quality test asks how the partnership is working, not how you regard each other. And if you are wondering whether what you feel is love at all, am I in love is the closer fit. This page is about respect only, from your side, including the respect you owe yourself.

5

Respect and love in everyday life

Respect is mostly small. It is asking "what do you think?" before you book the trip. It is letting your partner tell a story their way, even if you would have told it better. It is saying, in front of friends, something good about them that they did not know you had noticed. And it is telling them, calmly, when something they said hurt, because you take yourself seriously too.

None of these is dramatic, and all of them fade quietly when life gets busy. That is why the questions ask about the past month rather than about the relationship in general. Taken again in a few months, after a change, your answers may look different.

6

When it is more than respect

Some of the behaviors on this test, checking a partner's phone or location, deciding who they can see, and contempt that comes out as name-calling, also appear on lists of controlling behavior. If you recognize those in yourself and they worry you, that is worth acting on. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 takes calls from people concerned about their own behavior toward a partner, confidentially. And if you are afraid of your partner, the same line is there for you.

7

What tends to help

Say one thing you admire, specifically, this week. Admiration that gets said tends to grow.

Hand one area back to your partner completely, and notice what it is like when it is done their way.

Practice one small act of self-respect: saying "that hurt" within the day, or keeping one plan of your own.

And if you want to think through a hard conversation first, an AI coach is there at any hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to respect someone to love them?

To feel love, no. People love partners they have stopped respecting, sometimes for a long time. To keep a relationship good, mostly yes. Without respect, love tends to sour into contempt, control or one person disappearing to keep the peace. Respect is what makes love safe to be in: the sense that the other person thinks well of you, trusts you to run your own life and expects you to stand up for yourself.

Is respect more important than love in a relationship?

It is a common debate, and the honest answer is that each needs the other. Love without respect tends to turn possessive or dismissive. Respect without love can make a good working partnership that feels distant. What respect adds is durability: it is what lets two people disagree, change and have bad years without either one being made smaller. The couples who come through hard stretches usually have both.

How do you show love and respect in a relationship?

Through small, repeated behavior more than big gestures. Ask before decisions that affect both of you. Let your partner do things their way. Say what you admire about them, to them and to other people. Accept their no without sulking. Apologize specifically when you get it wrong. And respect yourself too: say when something hurts and ask for what you need. If you want to know how love itself lands for each of you, the love language quiz on this site looks at that.

What does losing respect for your partner look like?

Usually it is gradual and shows in small habits: eye-rolling while they talk, sighing at their ideas, describing them to friends in unflattering ways, taking each mistake as typical of them, and correcting or managing them more. Often it sits on top of resentment that has not been said. The first part of this test picks up exactly those signs, and the matching result explains how admiration tends to come back.

What are the 36 questions that lead to love?

They come from a psychology experiment on whether closeness between two strangers can be built quickly. Pairs took turns answering 36 questions that get more personal as they go, and many felt closer afterwards. They are about closeness rather than respect, and they work for long-term couples too. For a ready-made set, the deep conversation starters tool on this site has questions in the same spirit.

Is this a love test?

Not in the sense of a compatibility score or a crush quiz. It does not predict whether a relationship will work or measure how much you love someone. It looks at one part of love that is easy to lose sight of: how you act toward the person you love, and toward yourself, day to day. If you want to know whether what you feel is love, the am I in love quiz is the closer fit, and are we compatible looks at how two people match.
