Should You Try to Get Your Ex Back, and What to Say First

A chat about how to get your ex back that asks the hard questions first: why it ended, what has actually changed, and whether reaching out is a good idea at all. Then an honest plan, three first messages that put no pressure on them, and the moves to skip. No sign-up.

Tell me why it ended, who ended it, how long ago, and what has actually changed since. If they asked for space or you are in a no contact stretch, say so. I will be honest about whether reaching out makes sense, and if it does, help you write a first message that puts no pressure on them.

Nothing here sends anything. If they asked you not to contact them, this will not help you get around that.

This is support, not therapy, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger call 911. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are afraid of a partner, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

Most advice about getting an ex back is a list of tactics. Go silent for thirty days so they panic. Post the photos where you look like you are thriving. Mention someone new in passing. Even when one of those gets a reply, it gets you back into the relationship that ended, with a game running underneath it this time.

This page takes the other approach. Before any message, the chat asks the three questions that decide whether there should be one: why it ended, what has actually changed, and whether they are with someone else. Then, if reaching out still makes sense, it gives you an honest plan, three first messages that put no pressure on them, and the moves to skip.

1

Start with why it ended, in their words

Not your summary of it. If they said you never made time for them, that is the reason, even if you think the real reason was their job or their friends. The version you tell yourself at 2 AM is usually the one that lets you off the hook, and it is the one they will not recognize.

Write it down in one sentence. If you cannot, that is worth knowing before you write anything else, because the first real conversation will start there whether you plan for it or not.

2

What has actually changed

"I have changed" is the most common line in messages to an ex and the least believed. It is a claim, and they have heard it before. What is believable is a specific thing you did differently, for long enough that it is not a performance.

Not: I have been working on myself and I am a different person now. Instead: I stopped drinking on weeknights in February, and I have not missed it.

If nothing has changed yet, on either side, a message now restarts the same relationship. That is not a reason to give up. It is a reason to wait until something has.

And if they are seeing someone, the decent move is to leave that alone. A message designed to pull someone out of a relationship is not a second chance, and it would not start one well.

3

The first message asks for nothing

The first message after a breakup has one job: to be easy to read and easy to answer, including easy not to answer. It does not reopen the relationship. It does not ask to talk. It does not explain the last three months.

Not: I have been thinking about us nonstop and I know we can make it work, can we talk tonight? Instead: Walked past the taco place on 5th and thought of you. Hope the new job is going well. No need to reply.

The second one leaves them all the room. If they want more, they will reply with more. If they do not, you have lost nothing and kept your dignity, which matters more than it seems right now. If you need a text for a different reason, like returning their things or a birthday, what to text your ex writes from the reason you are texting.

4

What a real conversation has to cover

If they reply and you end up talking, the conversation that matters is not about how much you miss each other. It is about the thing that ended it. What it was like for them. What you understand now that you did not then. What would be different this time, specifically, and how either of you would know if it was not.

If you skip that conversation because things are going well, you are back together on the old terms, and the old ending is still waiting there.

5

What not to do

Jealousy plays, including the photos and the new person you mention on purpose. Ultimatums. Showing up at their home or work uninvited. Messages through their friends or family. Love-bombing: flowers, long letters, a grand gesture they did not ask for. Quoting their old texts back to them to prove a point.

All of these put pressure on someone who said no. Pressure is the opposite of what you are trying to show, which is that being around you is easy now.

6

When not to try at all

If they blocked you, asked you not to contact them, or there is a protective order, the answer is to respect it, full stop. The chat will not help you get around that.

If the relationship involved fear, threats, or control, the chat will not write a message to them, and that is on purpose. Your safety comes before getting anyone back. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, you can text START to 88788, or use the chat at thehotline.org. If the breakup has you thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the US.

If you are unsure whether to reach out at all, the should I text my ex quiz is the step before this one. If you want to know where you actually are with it, try the am I over my ex quiz. And if the honest answer right now is space, the no contact plan helps you keep it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to get your ex back?

Sometimes, and nobody can promise it in your case. Couples do get back together, and it tends to go better when the thing that ended it has actually changed and both people chose it freely. It tends to go badly when one person was pressured, guilted or made jealous into it. You control your side: what you understand, what you have changed, and one honest message. Their answer is theirs.

How do I ask my ex for a second chance?

Not in the first message. Ask once you are actually talking again and you can say, specifically, what ended it and what is different now. Keep it plain: I would like to try again, and here is what I understand now that I did not then. Then let them answer in their own time. If they say no, that is the answer. A second ask, or a bigger gesture, turns a request into pressure.

Is there a text that will get my ex back?

No, and any list that promises one is selling something. A good first message is short and asks for nothing: an ordinary, specific thing that made you think of them, a genuine good wish, and room not to reply. Leave out the relationship, the breakup, how much you miss them, and any request to talk. Its only job is to show you can be in contact without pressure.

How do I make my ex miss me?

You cannot make anyone feel anything, and the tactics that claim to, like going silent so they panic, posting to look happy, or mentioning someone new, are pressure in disguise. Even when they get a reaction, they set the relationship back up on a game. What you can do is get on with your life for real and, if you reach out, be someone easy to talk to.

Does this save what I write, or do I need an account?

No account, no email, no sign-up. What you type goes to the coach so it can answer and is not stored on this page after you close the tab. Nothing is sent to your ex, and the drafts cannot be sent from here. Copy anything you want to keep, because closing the tab loses the whole conversation.
