Most people looking for this have already written the letter several times, at hours they would rather not admit to. What they have not done is write it down, because a blank page after a breakup is its own kind of dread. So this does not hand you a blank page. It asks you five questions, one at a time, and the next one does not appear until you have answered the one in front of you.

Why you write it and do not send it

Sending it puts the ending back in their hands. You write four paragraphs, you press send, and then you are waiting again: for the read receipt, for the reply, for the version of them that finally understands. That wait is the thing you are trying to get out of.

Unsent, the letter does one job. It moves what is looping in your head into words with edges on them. Vague grief circles for months. A sentence with a period on the end stops.

The two checks it runs on your words

When the letter assembles, the page looks at your own text and shows you two counts.

The first is question marks. A closure letter that asks questions is still negotiating. "Did you ever mean any of it" is not a closing line, it is an opening one, and you already know it is not getting answered.

The second is how many of your sentences begin with "you" against how many begin with "I". A letter made almost entirely of what they did is an argument you are having alone in a room. Neither count says the letter is wrong. They show you the shape of what you wrote, which is close to impossible to see while you are writing it.

What to do with it after

Read it once. Then leave it alone for a day and read it again, because the second reading is where you find out which parts you meant. Some people keep it in a note and delete it a week later. Some print it and burn it. The ritual is not the mechanism. Writing the specific sentences is.

Expect it to feel worse for about an hour and better the next day. That order catches people out and makes them think the letter did not work. Naming a loss out loud usually costs something up front.

What the letter does is finish the sentences you have been half-saying for weeks, so the loop has somewhere to land.
