AI Grief Coach

This is a free AI grief coach you can use on this page. Tell it who or what you lost and what today is like, and it stays with that first, then offers one or two small things for the hours ahead. It is an AI, not a person and not a grief counselor. No sign-up.

I am an AI, and there is no rush here. Tell me who or what you lost, how long ago if you want to, and what today is like: an ordinary day that is somehow harder, a date that is coming, or something someone said. I will stay with that first, and only then offer something small for the hours ahead.

An AI, not a person and not a grief counselor. It never knew the one you lost, and it will not speak for them.

This is support, not therapy, and it is not a diagnosis. If you are in immediate danger call 911. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are afraid of a partner, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

Want to keep going without a session limit? The Lovon app is the same approach, any hour.

Search for a grief coach and most of what comes back is written for people who want to become one: certification courses, job listings, explainers. If you are the one grieving, none of that helps at eleven at night. This page is a chat you can use right now.

It is an AI. It knows what you type into this conversation and nothing else. You do not need an account, and on this site the conversation is not saved to one. It disappears from this page when you close the tab.

1

What the chat does with what you tell it

It goes slowly. First it says back what you lost and what today is like, in your words, so you can tell it heard your loss and not a general idea of one. It does not hurry you toward feeling better or treat the five stages as a checklist you are behind on. The grief guide explains why that list was never a route.

Then one or two small things for the next few hours: a text to the friend who said "let me know if you need anything", or a sentence for the colleague who asks how you are. And one gentle question, so the next reply fits you better.

2

Situations people bring to it

The first weeks. The funeral is over, the relatives have flown home, and the house is very quiet.

A date that is coming. The first birthday without them, the anniversary, the holiday they always hosted. It helps to decide one thing about the day in advance.

Guilt and "what if". If I had called that night, if I had pushed for the doctor, if I had stayed. The chat will not argue you out of it. It can help you separate what you knew then from what you know now.

When everyone else has moved on. Friends stopped asking, and work expects you back at full speed. It can help with the first morning back: what to say, and what you are allowed not to say.

Things you never got to say. If they keep circling, a letter to someone you lost gives them somewhere to go.

Losses other people do not count. A pet, a pregnancy, a relationship, a future you were planning on. All of it is grief, and none of it is ranked here. If the one you lost was an animal, the pet loss check covers the guilt that often follows a decision at the vet.

A wave years later. A song in a supermarket, a date you forgot was coming. Grief often comes back like this long after the sharp part has loosened, and it does not mean you went backwards. To see where you are now, the grief check takes a couple of minutes.

If the loss is someone else's and you are trying to support them, what to say to someone grieving is the better page.

3

What it will not do

It will not speak for the person who died: not what they would want, whether they forgave you, or whether they would be proud. It never met them, and comfort built on a guess is not comfort.

It will not put a timeline on your grief or look for a silver lining. It will not diagnose you, and after a pregnancy loss or an illness it makes no medical claims; questions about what happened belong with your doctor.

It is a coach, not a grief counselor or a therapist. If months have gone by and nothing has shifted at all, or you cannot eat, sleep or work, a doctor or a licensed therapist is the right next step.

4

When it stops being a grief question

Missing someone so much that you wish you could see them again is grief. If it turns into thoughts of not wanting to be alive, of dying, or of joining them, the chat is set up to say so plainly and point you to 988 first. You do not have to wait for it. In the US you can call or text 988 at any hour, and call 911 if you are in danger right now.

This chat, like the Lovon app, is for adults 18 and over. If you are younger and someone you love has died, please tell an adult you trust.

Text here, voice in the app

This page is a text chat that runs for about ten messages, which is enough for one evening or one hard date. The Lovon app takes the same approach by voice, which some people find easier when typing the words feels too final. It is an AI there too, not a person. If you want to keep going, get the Lovon app.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI be a grief coach?

It can do part of what a grief coach does: listen to the specific loss at any hour, without changing the subject, and help with the practical edges of the next few days, like a hard date or the first morning back at work. What it cannot do is know you or the person you lost, notice how you are doing over months, or sit in a room with you. It works best alongside the people in your life, not instead of them.

Is this AI grief coach free?

Yes. The chat on this page is free to use, with no account, email or sign-up. A session runs about ten messages, which is usually enough for one evening or one hard date. If you would rather say it out loud, or keep going past that, the Lovon app takes the same approach by voice.

Is it a real person?

No. It is an AI, not a person and not a licensed professional. Each reply is written by the AI from what you typed in this conversation. It does not know you beyond that, it never knew the person you lost, and it will not pretend to speak for them.

What is the difference between grief coaching and grief counseling?

Grief counseling and grief therapy are done by licensed professionals who can assess how you are doing, work with your history, and treat what grief can turn into, such as depression. Grief coaching is support with the present: getting through the days, the dates and the conversations. This chat is coaching, from an AI. If nothing has shifted after many months, or you cannot eat, sleep or work, see a doctor or a licensed therapist.

How do I get through the anniversary or their birthday?

Decide one thing about the day before it arrives. Who you will be with, or that you will be alone on purpose. One small thing you will do for them, like their food, their music or a place they liked. And one thing you are allowed to skip. The days before are often harder than the day itself, so plan a little for those too. The chat can help you work this out for your particular date.

Why does grief hit me again years later?

Because the loss is still there even after the sharp part has loosened. A song, a smell, a date, or a milestone they are not here for can bring it back at full strength for a while. That is common, and it does not mean you are going backwards. If a wave keeps you from functioning for weeks, it is worth talking to a doctor or a licensed therapist.

What happens to what I type here?

You do not need an account, email or sign-up. What you type goes to an AI so it can write the reply. On this site the conversation is not saved to an account, and it disappears from this page when you close the tab, so copy anything you want to keep. You can leave out names and any details that identify someone. The coach works the same without them.
