MASH Game

Mansion, Apartment, Shack or House? Fill in your lists, draw the spiral and let MASH cross out everything but your future, just like on notebook paper.

The paper fortune teller

What does your future look like?

MASH is the classic notebook game that predicts your future: Mansion, Apartment, Shack or House, who you marry, your job, your car, your city and how many kids. You fill in the options, a spiral picks a magic number, and the game crosses options out until one is left in every list.

Blank boxes use the grey examples. Want your own options? Fill them in below first. Tip: put your crush in Who you marry.

How MASH works

1. Write your lists

Across the top of the page sit the letters M, A, S and H: Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House. Under them go your lists: who you will marry, your car, your job, your city, how many kids, your pet and where you will honeymoon. Write four options in each. The fun is in mixing dream picks with terrible ones.

2. Draw the spiral

Someone draws a spiral in the corner of the page, often with their eyes closed, until a friend says stop. Draw a straight line from the middle out to the edge and count how many times it crosses the spiral. That count is your magic number.

3. Count and cross out

Start at the M and count every item on the page in order, through each list and back round to the top. Each time you reach the magic number, cross that item out and start again from 1 at the next one. Anything already crossed out is skipped.

4. Read your future

When a list is down to one item, circle it: that one is decided, and you stop counting it. Keep going until every list has one circled item, then read the whole thing out loud like a fortune: the home, the city, the person, the car, all of it.

MASH is the fortune teller people have drawn in the back of notebooks for decades. Nobody seems to know who invented it; it spread the way playground games do, from one sleepover and one study hall to the next. The name comes from the four homes written across the top of the page: Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House. Underneath go the lists that decide the rest of your life, a spiral picks a number, and the counting does the rest. This version plays exactly like the paper one, with the pencil work done for you.

1

How to play MASH online

Start with the lists. Under each heading there are four empty lines: who you will marry, your car, your job, the city you live in, how many kids, your pet and where you go on your honeymoon. Type whatever you like over the hints, or press Fill the rest for me and the game writes the empty ones for you. Then press Draw my spiral. A spiral starts drawing itself on the page; press Stop when it feels right, or press the space bar on a computer. The rings are counted, and that count becomes your magic number. MASH then counts round the page, crossing out every item that lands on your number, until each list has one item left. Those survivors are read out as your future, and you can share it, play again with the same lists or go back and change them.

2

How the spiral and the magic number work

On paper, one person draws a spiral, usually with their eyes closed, while a friend waits to shout stop. You then draw a straight line from the center to the edge and count how many times it crosses the spiral. Here the spiral grows about one ring every half second, and a red line counts the rings for you once you stop. The number can be anything from 2 to 12. A small number crosses things out quickly and in clumps; a big number jumps around the page and is much harder to predict, which is half the fun. Counting always starts at the M, runs through every list in order and wraps back to the top, skipping anything already crossed out. When a list is down to its last item, that item is circled and the counting passes it by.

3

What to put in your MASH lists

The classic trick is to mix two dream answers with two disasters in every list. Put your crush and your celebrity crush next to someone you would never pick, a sports car next to a minivan with a dent, a dream job next to something like professional napper. Cities can be real places or ridiculous ones, and the pet list is where people get creative: a llama, a grumpy cat, a goldfish with a human name. The idea lists under the game have plenty to borrow if your mind goes blank. Keep it kind if you write in friends' names, since the result will probably get read out loud.

4

Other ways to play

Once you know the rules, the categories are yours to change. Some people play a ten-years-from-now version with lists for college, first job and where you will be living. Friends often swap and fill in each other's lists, which is funnier because nobody gets to protect their favorite answer. Couples sometimes play it as a joke version of planning the future, with lists for dream trips, house rules and the name of a future dog. You can also play the old way: grab a sheet of lined paper and follow the rules printed under the game.

5

Tips for playing with friends or a crush

MASH works best out loud. Read the fortune in your most dramatic voice, and let whoever drew the spiral take the blame for anything terrible. If you are playing with a crush, keep the lists light and silly rather than putting them on the spot; a game should never make someone feel cornered. Play again with the same lists to see how much a different number changes everything, and save the best futures to send later. And if MASH puts your crush next to a shack and twelve kids, remember that it is a spiral, not a prophecy.

6

Is MASH real?

No, and that has always been the charm. A spiral cannot know who you will marry. What MASH does show is whose name you wrote down first, and that can be a small answer of its own. If there is a real person behind the name on your list, the Do They Like Me quiz looks at the signs that actually matter, and How to Tell Someone You Like Them helps when you are ready to say it. Frequently Asked Questions

What does MASH stand for?

MASH stands for Mansion, Apartment, Shack and House, the four homes written across the top of the page. Where you will live is always one of those four. The other lists, like who you marry and what you drive, are up to you.

How do you play MASH?

Write four options in each list, then draw a spiral until someone says stop and count its rings to get your magic number. Count through every item on the page and cross out each one that lands on that number, starting again from 1 each time. When every list has one item left, read them out as your future.

How do you get your magic number in MASH?

Draw a spiral until a friend says stop, then draw a line from the center to the edge and count how many times it crosses the spiral. In this version the spiral draws itself and you press Stop; the rings are counted for you, from 2 up to 12.

What categories go in a MASH game?

The classic set is home (always M.A.S.H.), who you will marry, your car, your job, the city you live in, how many kids and your pet. Many people add a honeymoon spot, as this version does. You can swap in anything you like when you play on paper.

Can MASH predict who you will marry?

No. MASH is a game of chance, and the spiral picks the number, not fate. It is fun because the result can be perfect or ridiculous. If you want a real read on a crush, the Do They Like Me quiz looks at actual signs.

What if I do not know what to write?

Leave the lines empty and the hints are used, or press Fill the rest for me and the game picks from its idea lists. The full lists are printed under the game, with plenty of options for every category.

Can I play MASH with friends?

Yes, and it is better that way. Let a friend press Stop on your spiral, read each other's futures out loud, or fill in each other's lists. Play again keeps the same lists and draws a new spiral, so everyone can take a turn.

Can I share my MASH result?

Yes. When your future appears, press Share my future. On a phone it opens the share menu; on a computer it copies your future and a link to the game, so your friends can play too.
