What this means

At this range all three kinds of connection are running low at once, and the honest thing to say is that this is genuinely hard, not a small problem being over-felt.

It is worth separating two things that feel identical from the inside. One is circumstance: a move, a breakup, a new job, remote work, everyone scattering after a life stage ended. The other is the pattern that circumstance sets off — withdrawing, expecting rejection, finding contact effortful, and reading other people as less available than they are. The first is not your doing. The second is not your fault either, but it is the part that responds to work.

Something people at this level often carry that the score cannot see: the belief that they are lonely because of something wrong with them. It is a very common conclusion and it is usually not supported by the evidence. Loneliness at this level has far more to do with structure — where you live, what your week looks like, whether anything in it repeats with the same people — than with whether you are likeable.

Also worth knowing: chronic loneliness is not just unpleasant. It affects sleep, immune function and cardiovascular health at magnitudes comparable to other major health risks. Treating it as a real problem to solve rather than a mood to push through is the correct response.

What to do next

Start with structure over feelings. Loneliness at this level rarely improves through motivation, because motivation is one of the things it takes. What works better is a repeating commitment that does not depend on how you feel that day — something weekly, with the same people, where turning up is the default.

Then pick one dormant connection rather than trying to build a circle. One person, contacted twice, is more achievable than a plan.

Be careful with the interpretation step: at this level a slow reply will read as confirmation. It usually is not.

If this has lasted months, talking to a therapist is a reasonable step, and not an extreme one. If you want somewhere to say the unedited version in the meantime, Lovon is available at any hour.

The items on this test are written by Lovon around the three-part structure described above. This is not the UCLA Loneliness Scale and does not reproduce it or any other copyrighted instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

Loneliness and depression overlap and can feel similar. If alongside this you have had weeks of low mood, lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or noticed changes in sleep and appetite, that is worth a conversation with a doctor.
