What this means

A score in this range usually means two of the three parts are struggling at the same time, and that the pattern has become predictable to the people around you as well as to you.

The mechanism is worth understanding, because it explains why boundaries advice tends to bounce off at this level. When a limit is stated and then taken back under pressure, everyone involved learns something. You learn that holding the line produces conflict you cannot easily tolerate. The other person learns, usually without any bad intent, that pressure works and the first answer is not the real answer. Neither of you decided this. It just becomes the rhythm, and the next limit needs more energy than the last one to survive.

Resentment is the reliable signal here. It tends to be treated as a character flaw, something to be talked out of. It is better read as information: it shows up where you gave something you did not actually have to give. If you notice you are keeping score, or feeling used by people who never asked for as much as you offered, that is the boundary system reporting a deficit rather than a moral failing.

At this level it is also common to have quietly stopped saying anything at all in one relationship, and to be managing it through avoidance instead. Shorter replies, less contact, a slow drift. It can feel like strength. Mostly it postpones the conversation and adds distance to whatever the original problem was.

What to do next

Start with one relationship, not with boundaries in general. The skill is specific to the room you are in, and trying to fix all of them at once is how people end up doing nothing.

Then write the limit as something you will do rather than something they must stop doing. You need to stop calling me late depends on their cooperation. If a call comes after eleven I will answer it in the morning does not. It is not a punishment or an announcement, just what happens next, and it removes the argument about whether your reason is good enough.

Expect the pushback to be worst the first time. A limit that has been retracted before gets tested harder, and holding it once is what changes the pattern.

If you tend to over-explain, cut the reasons down to one line. Long justifications invite negotiation, because they hand the other person something to argue with.

If it helps to rehearse the exact sentence first, Lovon is there for that, at whatever hour the conversation is keeping you up.

The statements are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. This is not a published research instrument and does not reproduce one. There are no clinical norms behind the five bands either. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and moving from one band to the next is not a meaningful clinical event. Nothing here is a diagnosis, and no online test can give you one.

One limit on what any of this can do. If naming a limit with a particular person leads to anger you have to manage, punishment, or consequences you cannot absorb, that is a different situation from a skill you have not learned yet, and it is worth describing to someone you trust or a professional who can look at the specifics with you.

If the pattern is more about needing everyone to be fine with you, the [am I a people pleaser quiz](/quiz/am-i-a-people-pleaser) covers that directly, and [am I codependent](/quiz/am-i-codependent) covers the version where the line disappears inside one relationship. When the hard boundary is with family, the [family boundary plan](/free-tools/app/family-boundary-plan) walks you through one specific limit and the wording to use.
