Conflict is doing damage

What this means
Your answers sit near the top of the scale, which means conflict is currently going badly on all three fronts at once: things are not raised in time, they escalate when they are, and almost nothing gets repaired afterwards.
At this level the pattern has its own momentum. Arguments start already loaded, because none of the previous ones finished. Small requests get heard as attacks, because a great deal has arrived as an attack before. And both people are usually convinced, with evidence they can point to, that they are the reasonable one. That is what makes this so hard to solve from inside it.
It is also common at this range to have stopped expecting anything different. That expectation is worth holding loosely. Conflict behaviour is learned, and it changes more readily than the feeling suggests. What it does not change with is willpower alone, applied in the middle of an argument, on the day.
The most important thing to say here is a line the test cannot draw for you. High conflict is not the same as harm. If any of this includes threats, intimidation, being controlled, being stopped from leaving, property being damaged, or any physical force, then it is not a conflict style and none of the advice below applies. Safety comes before repair, and that belongs with a domestic abuse service rather than a communication plan. In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.
If none of that is present and this is two people locked in a pattern neither of them wants, the situation is hard but not unusual, and it does respond to structured work.
What to do next
Involve a third person. At this score the honest recommendation is couples therapy if both of you are willing, and individual therapy if only you are. This is the one range where self-directed communication tips are unlikely to be enough, and saying otherwise would not be doing you a favour.
While you arrange that, lower the stakes rather than raising the effort. Agree that either of you can stop a conversation, that stopping is not conceding, and that whoever stops it names a time to come back. Keep hard topics to daylight hours and to one at a time.
Do not read the score as a verdict on the relationship or on you. It describes the current pattern between two people, and the pattern is the most changeable part of any relationship.
Lovon is there to talk to in the meantime, including at the hours when this is loudest. It is support between the harder conversations, not a replacement for a therapist.
This quiz is for self-reflection and educational purposes. It is not a diagnosis, clinical instrument, or replacement for professional care. If any of this raises concerns, consider talking to a licensed therapist. How we build these quizzes.
