What this means

You are in the second band, which usually means two of the three parts are working and one is running thinner. Almost nobody lands here with all three low. The total comes from one facet pulling the rest of the number up.

The three are worth naming, because the next step is different for each. Cognitive empathy is working out what someone is feeling and why. Affective empathy is feeling something alongside them rather than only observing it. Empathic concern and regulation is what happens after the feeling arrives: whether it turns into something useful, or into overwhelm that makes you step back.

Three shapes account for most scores in this range. The first is capacity. You read people well and you care, but hard conversations leave a residue that lasts, and you have quietly started avoiding some of them. The second is accuracy. You respond warmly and quickly, but sometimes to the wrong thing, because you assumed the other person was experiencing the situation the way you would. The third is distance. You can name exactly what someone feels and it stays information, correct but not moving.

None of these is a verdict on your character. Cognitive empathy in particular is a skill of attention, and it drops when you are distracted, stressed, or talking to someone whose life is very unlike your own. Affective resonance flattens under exhaustion and under low mood. Regulation is the first thing to go when you are already carrying a lot for other people.

The reason to look at this now rather than later is that the third part reinforces itself once it slips. Feeling flooded by someone's distress makes the next hard conversation more expensive, so you have fewer of them, so people tell you less, so you get less practice at all three.

What to do next

Find your facet before doing anything else. Reread the questions you answered furthest in the unhealthy direction and see whether they were about reading, feeling, or what came afterwards.

If it is reading, the move is asking instead of inferring. One question, of the is-it-more-this-or-more-that kind, beats a confident guess and corrects faster than any amount of thinking about it.

If it is feeling, look at your own load first. Flatness toward other people is more often a symptom of your own state than a fact about your capacity for other people.

If it is what comes afterwards, the work is on the line between being present and taking on. Support lands better when you stay yourself while listening than when you go under with them.

If you want to think a specific conversation through before you have it, Lovon can help you work out what to say.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three-part structure described above. This is not the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Empathy Quotient, or any other published instrument, and it does not reproduce one. There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 31 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 29.

Nothing here is a diagnosis. It cannot say anything about autism, about personality disorders, or about any other named condition, and a score at either end is not evidence for one. What it can do is show which of the three parts is currently doing less, so that whatever you try next is aimed at the right one.

If the flatness you are recognising arrived alongside weeks of low mood, exhaustion, or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, that combination is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
