What this means

At this level more than one part of the loop is under strain at once, and the number is probably telling you about your own load as much as about your empathy.

Two quite different situations produce a score here, and they call for opposite responses.

The first is depletion. You used to read people well and care easily, and now conversations that would once have moved you land flat, or land so hard that you avoid them. Other people's difficulties start to feel like demands. You notice yourself keeping interactions short. This is what sustained caring without recovery does, and it is well documented in people who care for others professionally as well as in anyone carrying a long stretch of someone else's crisis. It is not a change in who you are, and it does not repair by trying harder.

The second is that reading and feeling have both been thin for a long time rather than recently. Some people find other people's inner states genuinely hard to infer while caring a great deal about them. That combination is real and it is not coldness. It sits in the first part of the loop, and it responds well to asking direct questions and badly to being told to be more sensitive.

This test cannot tell you which of the two you are, and it is worth being honest about that rather than reading the number as a verdict. What it can tell you is that the loop is not currently running end to end, and that the cost is probably showing somewhere already: people telling you less, conversations staying on the surface, a partner saying they feel unheard.

One more thing to check at this range. Flatness toward other people is one of the more common signs of burnout and of low mood. If it arrived alongside tiredness or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, the empathy reading is downstream of that, and the other thing is what needs attention.

What to do next

Start with your own state rather than with other people. If you are running on empty, no technique about listening better will hold. Sleep, load, and whether anything in your week exists for you are the variables that matter first.

Lower the ambition for individual conversations. Asking one accurate question and listening to the answer does more than trying to summon the right feeling.

Replace inference with checking. When you are not sure what someone feels, say so and ask. It is more accurate than a confident guess, and people generally experience it as care rather than as a gap.

If the flatness has lasted months, or came with weeks of low mood, that is worth raising with a doctor or therapist.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three-part structure described above. This is not the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, the Empathy Quotient, or any other published instrument, and it does not reproduce one. There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 31 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 29.

Nothing here is a diagnosis. It cannot say anything about autism, about personality disorders, or about any other named condition, and a score at either end is not evidence for one. What it can do is show which of the three parts is currently doing less, so that whatever you try next is aimed at the right one.

If the flatness you are recognising arrived alongside weeks of low mood, exhaustion, or loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, that combination is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
