What this means

At this level the third part of the scale is doing real work. What you know about people is not only accurate, it is in play. Spent in arguments, used to set the terms of a conversation, aimed at an outcome. That is what pushes a total into this range, and it reads better plainly than softened.

The experience from the inside is usually not villainy. It is competence. You can see the whole board, you know what will move the other person, and using that feels about as sinister as using any other thing you happen to be good at. Most people scoring here would call themselves good at conflict rather than say they are doing something to anyone.

The scale is pointing at the direction of the skill, not the skill. Three moves cluster in this band. Pressing a sore spot when an argument turns against you. Withholding something the other person wants, attention, an answer, a decision, until they come to you for it. Framing a request so it slips past the objection rather than putting it in front of them.

Where the cost actually lands

The first cost is editing. Once someone learns that what they admit can show up later as ammunition, they stop admitting things. They still love you and they go quiet in a particular way, and from your side it registers as them getting boring or distant rather than as a consequence of anything.

The second is stranger, and it is the one people in this band feel. Reassurance stops working. If you can always arrange for someone to say the thing you need to hear, then nothing they say is evidence about how they feel. You end up unable to be reassured by the person whose reassurance you wanted most, because you never got a version of them you had not shaped.

The third is drift. This style of conflict works in the short term, which means it does not correct itself. It gets more efficient.

What to do next

Take one named sore spot off the table permanently. Not a resolution to be better in the moment, because the moment is the problem. A fixed rule, with no exception for the times you are right.

Then spend the gap. There are roughly two seconds between noticing a lever and reaching for it, and one question fits inside them: what do I actually want here. It changes what comes out of your mouth more often than you would guess.

Then say the exposed version of the request. It is worse tactically and it is the only way to get an answer you can believe, because it is the only version where the other person was free to respond.

Lovon can be a place to run that version first, when saying it cold feels impossible.

The twelve statements here are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. There is no dark empathy scale to reproduce: the term describes a research profile rather than a published instrument, and nothing here copies a copyrighted test.

The bands have no clinical norms behind them. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 34 does not mean anything sharper than a total of 32. Nothing here is a diagnosis, and no set of twelve questions can identify a personality disorder.

If the flatness you recognise here arrived recently, alongside weeks of low mood, exhaustion, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy, that combination is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
