Traits shaping your relationships

What this means
At this level the traits are not occasional. They are part of how your relationships run, and the clearest evidence is not in how you feel about yourself. It is in what keeps happening around you.
Some of what people in this band recognise: arguments you win that never actually end. A partner who says they feel handled. Friends who are warm for a few months and then get busy. A family that tells you less than it used to. Being called charming by people who have known you a month, and something else by people who have known you ten years.
The feedback problem
What keeps a score up here is that all three traits interfere with hearing about their own costs, each in a different way. Narcissism turns criticism into a threat to your standing, so it gets fought instead of considered. Machiavellian cynicism reads a complaint as a tactic: they are only saying that because they want something. Low guilt removes the discomfort that would otherwise make you go back over what you did. One filter is manageable. Three together let almost nothing through.
So people in this band often have a long history of hearing the same sentence from different people and concluding each time that this particular person was unreasonable. Sometimes they were. When the same sentence arrives from a partner, a sibling and a friend from years ago, it is worth treating as information rather than as a coincidence.
What to do next
Collect the sentences. Write down, as close to the original words as you can manage, the three criticisms you have heard most often from people close to you. Do not argue with them on the page. Just look at whether they point at the same trait.
Practice repair, which is the skill all three traits wear down. A repair is short: here is what I did, here is how it landed on you, here is what I will do differently. No paragraph about why it made sense at the time. It will feel like losing something. It is not.
Add one transparency rule where you currently plan. With your partner, for example: say what you want and the reason for it in the same sentence, even when a smarter approach occurs to you halfway through.
A therapist is genuinely useful at this level, partly because they are one of the few people whose feedback is not tangled up in a relationship with you. Lovon is there in between for working out what to say, and for the arguments you want to look at again once they are over.
