What this means

At this level more than one part of the pattern is running high, and the important shift is where the cost sits. Wanting admiration and expecting special treatment mostly affect how you feel. When low responsiveness joins them, the cost moves onto other people, and the relationship starts organising itself around your needs.

This is the range where give-and-take goes missing. Someone offers to do the planning, the driving, the work of keeping in touch with both families, and you let them, because they offered. Your partner talks about a hard day and you are waiting for the gap where you can say something about yours. A friend who helped you move is still waiting to be asked how their own move went.

Why it is easy to miss

Nobody experiences their own attention wandering as a decision. It feels like being tired, or busy, or simply more gripped by your own situation, which is the one you are living in. And the people carrying the extra load are the least likely to announce it. They have learned that raising it produces a defence, or turns into a list of everything you do for them.

So the evidence arrives sideways. A partner stops telling you about their day. Friends stay warm and get slower to invite you. Someone you were close to drifts off with no clear falling out. You may notice yourself describing several past relationships the same way: the other person became distant, or demanding, or ungrateful. When the same shape shows up with different people, the common factor is worth looking at.

None of this is a verdict on whether you care about the people in your life. Plenty of people in this range care a great deal and do not see the imbalance, because the part of the scale that registers other people's needs is the part running quiet.

What to do next

Do a reciprocity check with one person, the one who matters most. Ask them directly what they do for the two of you that you probably do not notice. Write the answer down and do not respond to it in the moment. The urge to explain or correct is strong here, and it is the thing that has kept that list invisible.

Pick one item from what they said and take it over for a month without announcing that you are doing it.

Change how you listen, mechanically at first. When someone starts on a problem, stay inside their story for two follow-up questions before you bring in anything of your own.

If relationships ending the same way is familiar, a therapist who works with relationship patterns is a reasonable next step. Lovon can be somewhere to think out loud in between.

The twelve items on this test are written by Lovon around the grandiose form of narcissism described above. This is not the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, and it does not reproduce that or any other protected instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the five bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis. Narcissistic traits sit on a spectrum everyone is on, and narcissistic personality disorder can only be assessed by a qualified clinician with far more information than twelve statements.

A stretch of feeling unusually large, needing very little sleep and taking risks you normally would not is a different thing from a long-standing trait. If that describes recent weeks, it is worth a conversation with a doctor.
