What this means

Your answers sit near the top of the scale, which means all three parts are reading low at once: acting under doubt, saying what you want, and coming back after something does not work.

Before treating that as a description of your character, it is worth knowing how ordinary the causes usually are.

The most common one is time. Confidence runs on recent evidence, and a long stretch without any produces exactly this. A relationship that ended after many years and took the whole social structure with it. A job where nothing has been asked of you since before the pandemic. A period of illness or caring for someone else where every week went on getting through it. The stock ran out, and it ran out without any decision on your part.

The second cause is state. Low mood flattens all three parts at once and does it convincingly, because it supplies the reasoning as well as the feeling: there is no point, it will not work, they would not be interested. Anxiety does something similar from a different direction, making the cost of every attempt look enormous in advance. Neither is a fact about your abilities, and neither improves by trying to be braver.

The third possibility is that this has been the shape of things for as long as you can remember. If so, it is less a decline to reverse than a starting point to work from, and the work is the same either way: small, repeated, finished attempts.

One thing this score does not mean is that people find you unimpressive. Confidence is far more visible from the inside than from the outside. The gap between how disqualified you feel and how you actually come across is usually wide, and at this level it is the widest.

What to do next

Involve another person rather than doing this alone. A friend who knows what you are trying, a therapist, anyone who asks how it went. At this level the internal motivation is the part that is missing, so borrowing some structure from outside is the practical move, not a failure of independence.

Make the first attempt embarrassingly small and finish it. One message sent. One preference said out loud at dinner. One event attended for twenty minutes. Size does not matter here. Completion does, because that is what gets recorded.

Check the state question honestly. If the last few months have brought low mood, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or changes to sleep and appetite, that is the thing to deal with first, and it is worth a conversation with a doctor.

Lovon is there in the meantime, including for practising the first small thing before you do it.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three-part structure described above. This is not a published self-efficacy scale and does not reproduce one or any other copyrighted instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 34 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 32. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

Low mood and anxiety both flatten all three parts at once and can look exactly like low confidence. If this arrived alongside weeks of low mood, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or dread that keeps you out of ordinary situations, that is worth a conversation with a doctor.
