What this means

At the top of this scale the standards are no longer producing work. They are preventing it. All three parts are running at once, and they feed each other: the bar is set where almost nothing can clear it, missing it reads as a verdict on you, and so not starting becomes the only reliably safe move.

The honest description of this state is exhaustion rather than excellence. From the inside it rarely feels like high standards. It feels like being stuck, behind, and privately ashamed of how little is getting finished, which is then taken as further evidence and raises the bar again. People at this score often describe themselves as lazy. The evidence usually points somewhere else entirely.

In relationships it tends to show up as silence. The conversation you need to have has been rehearsed for months, and every version you draft has a flaw, so it never gets said. Small resentments accumulate behind the unspoken one. Meanwhile the things your partner does get checked, so the two of you have quietly stopped sharing the work. Plans, trips and photographs get held to a picture in your head and come back as disappointing even when they were fine. This is the range where a partner starts saying that nothing is ever enough, and where that lands as one more failure rather than as information.

Worth knowing: scores this high frequently sit alongside anxiety or low mood, and the direction runs both ways. A long stretch of stress, burnout or depression will push every facet here upward, so part of what you are reading may be the last six months rather than the last ten years.

What to do next

Lower the bar on purpose and in writing. Before you start anything this week, write the minimum version that counts as done, then do that and stop. Not the good version. The one that exists. The aim is to get output moving again, because nothing in this pattern improves while everything stays unstarted.

Pick the conversation you have been drafting longest and have it with imperfect words in the next seven days. Open with the fact that you have been sitting on it and do not know how to say it well. That sentence works better than the polished version you are waiting for.

Hand one recurring task over completely and do not inspect it. One. It will feel wrong, which is the point.

And do not do this alone. Therapy has specific, well-established approaches for this pattern and it moves faster with somebody watching the loop from outside. If the flatness, dread or exhaustion has been there for weeks, that is worth raising with a doctor too. Lovon is available in the meantime, including at the hour when the old mistakes get loud.

The items on this test are written by Lovon around the three-part structure described above. This is not the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, the Hewitt and Flett scale, or any other copyrighted instrument, and it does not reproduce one.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

Perfectionism sits close to anxiety and low mood, and a hard few months can raise every part of this score. If alongside this you have had weeks of dread, flatness or exhaustion, that is worth a conversation with a doctor.
