Sacrifice plus a rulebook

What this means
At this level two facets are running together, and they are not independent. The pattern is a trade, usually never stated out loud: I carry my half and most of yours, and in exchange you are supposed to be a certain kind of man. One side of it looks like sacrifice. The other side looks like standards. They feed each other.
Here is how the loop tends to run. You take on more than your share, because that is what a good partner does, and because asking feels worse than doing. The load builds, and with it the sense that you are owed. What you are owed is not usually reciprocity in the same currency. It is the role: he should be steadier, earn more, fix things, know what to do, not fall apart. So when he is anxious about work or quiet for a week or wants comfort rather than to give it, it does not just disappoint you. It reads as a broken contract.
The cost lands in a specific place. A partner who learns that fear and tiredness get a cold reception stops showing them, and gets efficient at hiding them. Some months later the complaint in the relationship becomes that he never opens up, that there is nobody home behind his answers. The two facts are connected, and the connection is invisible from your side, because from where you are standing you asked him to talk and he chose not to.
Where the rulebook came from
None of these rules were written by you. A real man provides. A real man does not cry. A woman who needs help is a burden. They arrived early, from a household or a church or a set of aunts, and they were absorbed before there was any way to evaluate them. That is worth saying plainly because the useful move is not guilt, it is inspection. Rules you inherited can be examined. Rules you think are just reality cannot.
What to do next
Take one rule and look at it. Write the sentence in full, something like a man should handle money without help. Then ask who taught it to you, what it protected them from, and whether it is doing the same job in your relationship.
Then stop trading. The load and the role need to be uncoupled, and the way to uncouple them is to make the load an actual conversation: what you are doing, what you want split, said as a request rather than as a bill.
And when he shows you something soft, do one thing differently. Do not solve it, do not hurry it, do not compare him to anyone. Stay for two minutes longer than is comfortable. That is the whole intervention, and it is harder than it sounds.
