What this means

A score in this range usually means the first rule is running hard and at least one of the other two is running with it. The odd thing about this band is that it often does not feel bad from the inside. Things at home have got quieter, and quiet reads as calm.

Here is the loop. You keep the difficult material to yourself, on the reasonable theory that nobody needs to carry it and that handling it alone is what an adult does. What your partner sees is a closed door with weather behind it. They ask, they get fine, or a short answer, or a flash of irritation. After enough of those they stop asking. Then the things they would have brought to you start going somewhere else, or nowhere. From your side the friction ended. From theirs it is not peace, it is withdrawal, and by the time it gets said out loud it has usually been going on for months.

The second half of the loop is what makes this hard to catch. Because they stopped bringing things, you have less evidence that anything is wrong, so the strategy looks like it is working. The feedback that would correct it is exactly the feedback the pattern suppresses.

There is a physical half too. Holding material instead of moving it does not neutralise it. It goes into sleep, into the jaw, into the second drink, into a flare of temper at something small that did not deserve it. That is not a metaphor about bottling things up. It is what the rest of the week looks like.

What this is not

It is not evidence that you are cold, or that you do not love the people in your house. Most people in this band are doing something they were taught was considerate. Holding it alone was presented as the decent option: do not put your weight on anyone else. The intention holds up fine. The result does not, because the people closest to you experience the closed door as distance rather than as protection, and they have no way to tell the difference from outside.

What to do next

Go and find out what stopped being said. The question is specific: ask your partner what they have stopped telling you, and then do not defend yourself for the length of the answer. That second part is the whole exercise.

Then give one thing back that is not anger. A single worry, said plainly, with no solution attached and no apology around it. It will feel out of proportion to say. It will not be out of proportion to hear.

If the words are the obstacle, get them down before the conversation rather than during it. Lovon can help you work out the first two sentences.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three rules described above. This is not the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory or any other published instrument, and it does not reproduce one.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 34 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 32. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

One of the costs this pattern carries is that low mood and heavy drinking often go unmentioned for a long time. If you have had weeks of flatness, lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or noticed alcohol doing more work than it used to, that is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
