What this means

Your answers sit in the low band, which on this scale means the rules are not running you. It is worth being precise about what that does and does not say. It does not say you are unmasculine, and it does not say you rejected everything you grew up with. Plenty of people in this band are steady, reliable, hard to rattle, the one other people call when something breaks at eleven at night. None of that is what the scale measures. It measures three specific rules that cost more than they return: show nothing but anger, hold the last word, need no one.

You can keep the first set without the second. Being dependable does not require going silent. Being the calm one in a crisis does not require being the one who never says he is frightened. Landing here suggests you already separated those, probably without making a project of it.

The three parts move independently, and one of them is usually a little higher than the rest even inside a low total. Look back at the questions you answered furthest in the wrong direction. For most people in this band it is the third group, self-sufficiency, because it is the least visible of the three and the most praised. Turning down help. Absorbing a bad month alone. Putting off the appointment. Nobody complains about any of that at the time, which is exactly why it stays.

What tends to slip first

Under pressure the order is fairly consistent. Self-sufficiency tightens first, because handling it alone feels like efficiency rather than like a rule. Then the emotional channel narrows, and irritation starts standing in for whatever is really going on. The dominance part is usually last, and it arrives as impatience rather than as anything dramatic: finishing sentences, deciding faster, treating a disagreement as a delay in the schedule.

A low score in an easy month is not the same as a low score in a hard one. If the last few weeks have been calm, read the number as a reading on calm conditions.

What to do next

Keep one channel open that is not anger. A conversation a month where you say the harder version of how you are doing keeps that muscle usable. Keeping it is much cheaper than rebuilding it at fifty.

Practise asking for small things before you need a large one. Help with a job in the house, a second opinion on a decision, a lift. Asking is a skill and it rusts without use.

If you want somewhere to say the version you would not say out loud yet, Lovon is there for that, including as practice before the conversation with an actual person.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three rules described above. This is not the Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory or any other published instrument, and it does not reproduce one.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 34 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 32. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

One of the costs this pattern carries is that low mood and heavy drinking often go unmentioned for a long time. If you have had weeks of flatness, lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or noticed alcohol doing more work than it used to, that is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
