What this means

At this level your worth is largely being set from outside, and it moves with whoever is nearest. A warm message and you are fine. A short reply and you are not. Nothing about you changed in those four hours, but the readout did, because the reading is being taken from them rather than from you.

What makes this heavy is that it does not feel like an opinion. It feels like information arriving. A partner who is quiet because of a bad week at work reads as a partner who is reconsidering you, and the evidence feels solid enough to act on.

The relationship cost is the specific thing to look at. When your worth is set by the person in front of you, the floor for what you will accept moves to wherever they put it. Plans get changed at the last minute and you say it is fine. Their mother says something that lands badly and you decide you are being sensitive. You apologise first every time, not because you were wrong but because the distance is unbearable. From the inside this looks like being easygoing, and that is usually what it gets called. The arithmetic underneath is different: someone who believes they were lucky to be chosen does not think they get to negotiate.

There is also a missing half to the question. In dating and in the early months of a relationship, attention goes almost entirely to whether you are being approved of, and almost none of it to whether you actually like the other person. The audition replaces the choice.

What to do next

Write the floor down in advance, while you are calm. Three things you will not accept in how someone treats you, in plain language, on your phone. You cannot work this out in the middle of a conversation, because in the middle of a conversation the other person is holding the calculator.

Use the friend test on anything you are unsure about. Describe the situation as if a friend had told it to you, in the same words, and notice what you would say back to them. The distance between that answer and the one you gave yourself is the size of the problem, and it is also the quickest part to correct.

Start asking the other half of the question. After a date, after an evening, after a phone call: what did I think of them. Not how did I do. It feels artificial for about two weeks, and then it starts changing what you tolerate.

If you also recognise yourself as the one who keeps the peace at any cost, the people pleasing pattern sits right next to this one and is worth looking at separately.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. This is not the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and it does not reproduce that or any other copyrighted instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 27 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 25. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

Persistent worthlessness is also a common feature of depression. If this has come alongside weeks of low mood, broken sleep, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy, that is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
