What this means

You are in the second band, which nearly always has one shape: the floor is broadly intact, and one condition is carrying more of your worth than it can safely hold.

Everyone has conditional worth. Caring about doing your job well, about how you look, about being someone people can rely on is not a flaw, and a person with no contingencies at all would be odd rather than healthy. What the score is pointing at is how much of the total runs through a single channel. When most of it does, an ordinary setback in that channel stops being an ordinary setback. A month that went badly becomes a statement about you. A photograph from a weekend away ruins a week.

There are four common channels and they feel completely different from the inside. Achievement: your worth tracks output, so rest is faintly uncomfortable and holidays take three days to land. Appearance: the mirror in the morning sets the tone, and a changing room can re-decide the day. Usefulness: you are worth something while you are needed, which makes receiving anything without producing something back surprisingly hard. Being chosen: your value moves with how warm the nearest person is being.

Where the weight sits

The fastest way to find yours is to look at what you reach for after you feel bad about yourself. People running an achievement contingency work. People running an appearance contingency change something about how they look. People running a usefulness contingency go and do a favour for someone. The reflex is the giveaway, and it is more reliable than the answer you would give if somebody asked you directly.

What to do next

Name the channel, then widen the base instead of trying to argue yourself out of it. Being told to stop caring about your work or your appearance does not function as advice and would not be good advice if it did. What functions is adding another place where you count that has nothing to do with the first one: something you are mediocre at and do anyway, people who know you outside the context where you perform.

Do one thing badly on purpose. Take a class in something you have no talent for and stay in it past the embarrassing part. The point is to collect direct evidence that being unimpressive at something does not change what you are worth, because that is not a claim you can settle by thinking about it.

Notice the half-life. After the next thing that goes well, watch how long the good feeling about yourself lasts before the counter resets. If the answer is a day, more wins are not the fix.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. This is not the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and it does not reproduce that or any other copyrighted instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 27 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 25. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

Persistent worthlessness is also a common feature of depression. If this has come alongside weeks of low mood, broken sleep, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy, that is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
