What this means

A score in this range usually means worth has turned into something you pay for, in advance and on repeat. The floor is thin, so the gap gets made up with proof, and proof expires.

The mechanism is the part worth understanding, because from the outside this pattern often looks like ambition and gets rewarded as ambition. You do something well. Relief arrives. It lasts a few hours, maybe a day, and then the counter resets and the next test is already in front of you. Nothing accumulates. Ten good years do not add up to a settled sense of being alright, which is why the advice to remember your achievements lands so badly on people here. The achievements are not in dispute. They just do not transfer.

Rest is the tell. If you are earning your worth rather than holding it, unstructured time feels slightly wrong, and a free Saturday quietly fills with things that count. Receiving is the other tell. Being given something with nothing expected back can be uncomfortable enough that you invent a way to square it within the week.

In relationships this turns into a job description. You drive, you plan, you remember the birthdays, you smooth things over with their family, you keep the logistics running. Some of that is genuine generosity. It also means you are rarely in the position of simply being there and being wanted for nothing in particular, which is the one thing that actually rebuilds a floor.

What to do next

Separate the standard from the verdict. High standards for your work are fine and can stay exactly where they are. What has to come apart is the automatic step from the work was not good enough to I am not enough. Catch it in the moment and say the two sentences separately, out loud if you are alone. They stop sounding like the same sentence faster than you would expect.

Time the half-life. After the next thing that goes well, notice how long the relief lasts before the next requirement appears. That number tells you more than the score does, and it makes the treadmill visible rather than merely tiring.

Then run an experiment in not producing. One evening with someone who likes you, where you bring nothing, arrange nothing and fix nothing. Pay attention to what surfaces in that gap, because whatever surfaces there is what the productivity has been covering.

If the tiredness has been running for months and rest has stopped working, that is worth treating as its own problem rather than as a lack of discipline.

The twelve items here are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. This is not the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and it does not reproduce that or any other copyrighted instrument.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back to yourself, not percentiles against a population, and a total of 27 does not mean anything more precise than a total of 25. Nothing here is a diagnosis.

Persistent worthlessness is also a common feature of depression. If this has come alongside weeks of low mood, broken sleep, or losing interest in things you used to enjoy, that is worth a conversation with a doctor rather than a self-help plan.
