What physical rest is

Physical rest is rest for your body. In Saundra Dalton-Smith's framework it comes in two kinds. Passive physical rest is sleep and naps. Active physical rest is gentle movement that helps your body recover instead of wearing it down further, such as stretching, yoga, massage or an easy walk. Your answers suggest this is the type of rest you are shortest on right now.

Being short on physical rest is not only about hours of sleep. You can sleep seven hours and still carry tension in your shoulders all day, or sit so long that your body never really switches off.

Signs you are short on it

You wake up tired even after a full night. Your neck, shoulders or lower back ache by mid-afternoon. Caffeine is doing more of the work than it used to. You fall asleep on the couch at 8 p.m. and then lie awake at midnight. You seem to catch every cold going around. If several of these sound familiar, your body is asking for more recovery than it is getting.

Physical rest in 5 minutes

Lie on the floor with your knees bent and let your back flatten. Breathe slowly and let your jaw and shoulders drop. Or stand up and stretch the part of you that aches: roll your neck, open your chest in a doorway, fold forward and let your arms hang.

A quick tense-and-release round also works. Tighten your fists, shoulders and face for five seconds, then let go and notice the difference. The Progressive Muscle Relaxation session guides you through the full version, one muscle group at a time.

Physical rest in an evening

Protect your bedtime more than your evening plans. The Sleep Calculator works backward from the time you need to wake up and tells you when to go to bed. Aim to put screens away half an hour before that.

If you keep staying up late because the evening is the only time that feels like yours, the revenge bedtime procrastination guide explains why it happens and what helps. A warm shower, a slow stretch, or a body scan meditation in bed all help your body shift into rest.

Physical rest on a weekend

Sleep in a little, but try to keep your wake-up time within about an hour of your weekday time, so Monday does not feel like jet lag. If you need a nap, a short one in the early afternoon is less likely to leave you groggy or keep you up at night than a long one late in the day.

Spend part of the weekend moving gently: a long walk, a swim, a yoga class, an hour in the garden. Active rest counts as rest. If you have been running on short sleep for weeks, the sleep debt guide explains how much you can catch up and how to do it without wrecking the next week.

What to watch for

Tiredness that does not lift with rest is worth checking with a doctor. If you sleep seven to nine hours and still wake up exhausted for weeks, if you snore loudly or wake up gasping, or if you feel weak or short of breath, see a doctor. Conditions such as sleep apnea, anemia, thyroid problems and depression can all show up as tiredness, and Dalton-Smith herself makes the same point: ongoing fatigue deserves a medical check.

To see whether your energy follows your sleep, log both in the daily mental health check-in. After two or three weeks, the week view shows whether your low-energy days come after short nights or after something else, such as long workdays. The Energy Audit can help you find what else is draining you.
