How you cope with stress

You cope by soothing. When stress hits, you reach for something that feels good right now: a snack, a show, your phone, a bit of shopping, a glass of wine. It takes the edge off quickly, and after a hard day you feel you have earned it.

What this does well

Comfort has its place. Being kind to yourself under stress is healthier than being harsh, and small pleasures do help you get through a tough evening. You already know how to look after your feelings, which is a skill many people lack.

Where it backfires

The relief from quick comforts tends to fade fast, and the stress is still there. Over time you may need more of the same to get the same effect, and habits like late-night scrolling, stress eating or drinking can start causing stress of their own: poor sleep, guilt, money worries. The comfort can also hide the cause, so nothing changes.

How to cope better as a Soother

Keep the kindness, change the tools. Build a list of comforts that leave you feeling better afterwards too: a hot shower, a walk, a call with a friend, a favorite song, a good meal eaten slowly. When stress hits, try one from the list before the usual habit. You do not have to give anything up, just add a first step.

Pause for one minute before you reach for the snack or the phone. Ask what you are actually feeling and what would help. Sometimes the answer is still the treat, and that is fine. Sometimes it is rest, company or a cry.

If you are drinking more to cope, or a habit feels hard to control, it is worth talking to a doctor.

Try next

The dopamine menu helps you build your own list of things that actually lift you. How to reduce stress covers ways to lower the stress itself, so you need less soothing.

This quiz is for self-reflection. It is not a diagnosis or a medical assessment, and it is not a validated psychological measure. The 12 questions were written by Lovon, drawing on the broad distinction in coping research between dealing with a problem, dealing with the feelings it brings and stepping away from it, and the result describes the style you chose most often.

If stress is affecting your sleep, health, work or relationships for weeks, or you are relying on alcohol or other substances to cope, talk to a doctor or a licensed mental health professional.
