The day has the wrong shape

What this means
At this score the missing is usually doing most of the work, and the rest of your life is still moving. You are getting up, going out, answering people. What keeps catching you is the shape of the day.
That is the part people are least prepared for. An animal does not occupy the emotional hours of a life, they occupy the structural ones. The first thing in the morning. The walk that got you outside whether you wanted to go or not. The weight that landed on the bed at the same time every night. The reason you came home instead of staying out. When they die, the grief does not arrive once. It arrives at each of those times, on schedule, for weeks.
This is also why the house itself becomes hard. The bowl in the corner. The lead on the hook. The patch of floor they chose over every other patch of floor. People describe walking a longer way round their own kitchen, and it sounds odd until you have done it.
A score here does not mean anything has gone wrong. It means a relationship that was physically present in most hours of your day has been removed from all of them at once, and your week has not rebuilt itself yet.
What to do next
Deal with the hours rather than the feelings. The empty slots are what keep ambushing you, so put something in the two or three that hurt most. If the morning walk is the hole, walk it anyway, or walk a different route at the same time. Ordinary and slightly artificial is fine. The point is that the hour has something in it.
Decide about their things on purpose, and know that there is no correct answer. Some people need the bed and the bowls gone within a day. Others need them left exactly where they are for months. Both are common. The only version that tends to go badly is someone else clearing it all away while you are out, so say which you want before it gets decided for you.
Tell one person the true version. Most people at this score have a work version, which is fine, and no other version at all, which is not. If nobody around you treats it as a real loss, the grief check written for losing a person will tell you something about the shape of what you are carrying, and a pet loss group online will usually tell you the rest.
Watch the calendar as well. The anniversary, their birthday if you kept one, the first trip where nobody needs feeding at home. Knowing a hard day is coming stops you reading it as going backwards.
