Frequently asked questions
Answers to some of the most common questions about how Lovon works and what it can (and can't) do.
Can a self esteem app actually help?
It depends what the app does. Ones that hand you affirmations to repeat tend to run into the same wall your own pep talks do. What helps more is getting the self-critical thought out of your head and into words, then looking at where it came from and whether it holds up. Lovon is built for that kind of conversation rather than for reciting lines.
Do affirmations work at all?
They can help if the statement is one you already partly believe, or if you keep it modest: "I handled that better than last time" instead of "I am confident." The problem is the big claims. When a statement contradicts what you believe about yourself, your mind argues with it, and you end up rehearsing the counterargument instead.
How is this different from a self-esteem journal or affirmation app?
A journal is a good place to notice patterns, but it does not ask you anything back. With Lovon you talk out loud and get questions: what happened right before that thought, whose standard is that, what would you say to a friend in the same spot. The back-and-forth is the part scripted exercises cannot do.
How do I know if it is low self-esteem or depression?
Low self-esteem is mainly about how you judge your own worth. Depression shows up in your body and energy too: sleep, appetite, and losing interest in things you used to care about. If that has been going on for weeks, or you feel numb rather than harsh toward yourself, that is worth taking to a doctor or a licensed therapist. Psychology Today's directory and FindTreatment.gov can help you find one.
What do I actually talk about in a session?
Whatever set it off. A comment at work you have replayed forty times, sending a text and then rereading it, avoiding a photo of yourself. Specific moments give you more to work with than "I don't like myself." You can try it during the 7-day free trial and see whether talking it out lands differently than reading about it.
