What this means

What you described is undefined, and it is also moving. There are real signs of something building: plans made more than an hour in advance, some overlap with each other's people, an unhurried morning here and there, a sense that you would probably get a straight answer if you pushed for one. And there is one thing conspicuously absent, which is a conversation where either of you says out loud what this is. Maybe it came up once and slid sideways. Maybe you have drafted the message four times and never sent it.

That gap is ordinary at this stage. It is also the part that does not close on its own. Undefined things rarely drift into being defined. They become defined when somebody risks a sentence.

None of this is a verdict, and it is not a prediction. This page cannot tell you what they would say, because you have not asked and so the answer is genuinely unavailable to you right now. What it can tell you is that the ambiguity you are carrying is not a fact about the connection. It is a piece of missing information, and missing information is something you can go get.

Why the conversation keeps not happening

Usually there are two fears underneath, and they pull in the same direction. The first is that naming it will break the spell, that the moment this becomes a thing with a word attached it stops being easy and starts being work. The second is hearing an answer you cannot un-hear. While nothing has been said, a maybe still feels like a soft yes.

What that reasoning leaves out is the cost of staying here. Ambiguity is not free. You pay for it in vigilance: watching how they phrase things, deciding whether it is too soon to suggest a Saturday, editing yourself down to seem casual. That is a tax, and it comes out of the same account you would use to actually enjoy this.

There is also a timing point worth knowing. Around two or three months in, most people have formed a private opinion about where this is going. They are often just waiting to see who says it first.

What to do this week

Ask once, in one sentence, without a runway. The phrasing that works is the kind that states what you want rather than asking them to guess: "I like this and I want to keep seeing you. I want to know whether we are heading toward something exclusive, or whether that is not where you are." Then stop talking and let them answer.

Two rules for afterward. Do not negotiate on the spot. "That is useful to know. Let me sit with it" is a complete response and buys you a day to think without agreeing to anything. And before you ask, decide privately what you would do with a no, so the answer does not have to be argued with in real time.

If the wording is the part that stalls you, the conflict script builder is decent at boiling a hedging paragraph down to one clean sentence you can actually say out loud.

What this is not

Asking is not an ultimatum, and it is not pressure. You are requesting information about your own life. Someone who wants the same thing you want will be relieved that you said it first. Someone who does not will tell you something true, and knowing that this week is better than finding it out in six months.
