You start the fight first

What this means
The move you reach for is heat. Things go quiet and good, and you find something. It is usually true, it is usually not urgent, and it usually surfaces at eleven at night rather than on a Saturday afternoon: the dishwasher, the thing they said to your sister in March, the tone of a two-word text. By the time you are in it, the conversation has a shape you know how to be inside, and the closeness that was making you itch has been replaced by something familiar.
This is not a character flaw and it is not a diagnosis. It is a strategy, and it survived because it works. Conflict is intimacy you can control. It holds the other person's full attention, it puts distance and contact in the same room at the same time, and it means that if this does fall apart, it falls apart on a night you picked.
Why this happens
Calm is not neutral for everyone. If the peace you grew up in was a lull rather than a state, quiet reads as a countdown, and your attention goes looking for the crack, because the crack is where the information is. A fight resolves that tension. What is happening outside finally matches what is happening inside, and there is a relief in it that is easy to mistake for being right.
Then repair comes, and the reunion is genuinely good, and the loop closes. None of this is manipulation. Most people running this pattern would describe themselves as the one who cares more, and they are usually not wrong about that.
What to do next
Put a curfew on the topic. If something bothers you after ten at night, it goes into a note on your phone and gets said in daylight or not at all. Most of what you write down at midnight does not survive the morning. The ones that do are your real complaints, and they deserve a better hour than that.
Say the sentence underneath the fight once, even badly. "I don't want to argue. I think I got strange this week because things have been good and I don't know what to do with that." That is more exposing than three hours about the dishwasher, which is exactly why the dishwasher is easier.
Get a script for the complaints that are real, because some of them are. Opening with what you want instead of what they did wrong changes the entire first minute of a hard conversation, and the conflict script builder will draft one with you if the blank page is where you usually stall.
What this is not
It does not mean you are the problem in every argument you have ever had, and it is not permission for anyone to dismiss what you raise. Some of your complaints are legitimate. The pattern is about timing and temperature, not about whether the content is true. Noticing that you reach for conflict does not sign you up to swallow things.
It also does not mean this relationship is finished. This is one of the easier patterns to interrupt, because the tell is so physical: the restlessness, the scanning, the specific hour of night. Once you can feel it starting, you have a choice you did not have before, and you will not always take it, which is fine. Taking it a third of the time changes a relationship.
