What this means

What you described is a guard that stopped being about one person and turned into a way of living. Almost nobody gets the real version of you. Nobody currently knows what you are actually worried about. A friend goes quiet for a week and it reads as confirmation rather than a busy week. An explanation that makes perfect sense settles nothing, because a good explanation is exactly what someone would say either way. And more than once, someone has told you that being close to you feels like a test — or you left before they got the chance to say it.

That is a heavy way to operate and it takes real energy to maintain. It is also worth saying plainly: this is not a diagnosis, it is not a character flaw, and it is not permanent. It is what a nervous system does after it decides that the cost of being wrong about someone is unbearable.

Why this makes sense and still costs you

The logic holds up on its own terms. If nobody gets all the way in, nobody can do to you what was done before. The guard works. That is precisely why it is so hard to set down.

The cost is that it does not filter. It cannot let in the person who would have been good to you while keeping out the person who would not, because it has no way of telling them apart in advance, so it holds the door on everyone equally. What that builds over time is not safety. It is solitude that feels like safety. And every year it runs, evidence that people can be trusted gets harder to collect, because nobody is being given the chance to provide any.

What to do this week

Do not try to become an open book. That is not the assignment and it would not work anyway. Try one small, contained thing instead.

Pick one person who has been steady with you and give them one true detail you would normally keep. Not the worst thing. Something real: "Work has been rough and I have not been sleeping much. I do not need anything, I just did not want to keep saying I am fine." One sentence. Then notice what they do with it, and write it down, because a guard like this tends not to file evidence that contradicts it.

Second, when you catch yourself pulling away from someone who has not done anything, name it before you act: "Nothing has happened yet." That is the entire intervention. It is small, and it interrupts the reflex long enough for you to choose.

Third, if the pull to withdraw arrives with a spike in your body — tight chest, the sudden need to be alone — a few minutes of a grounding exercise can bring the volume down enough that leaving becomes a decision rather than a reflex.

When this is bigger than trust

If this has spread past relationships — if your sleep, your appetite, or your interest in things you used to enjoy has gone flat too, or if there is something older underneath this that you have never told anyone — that is a question for a therapist rather than a quiz. Betrayal trauma responds to treatment, and working through it with someone trained in it is a very different experience from waiting it out alone.

And if you ever find yourself thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in the US. That line exists for exactly this, and using it is not an overreaction.

This quiz is for self-reflection and educational purposes. It is not a diagnosis, clinical instrument, or replacement for professional care. If any of this raises concerns, consider talking to a licensed therapist. How we build these quizzes.
