What this means

Your answers stayed low across all three areas this test scores: painful feelings, frustration and physical strain, and waiting without an answer. When something uncomfortable arrives, you can usually let it be uncomfortable for a while. You notice the urge to do something about it, and the urge does not get to decide.

That is what distress tolerance actually is. It is not feeling less. People in this range get hurt, bored, tired and anxious like anyone else. The difference sits in the gap between the feeling and the action. For you that gap is usually wide enough to think in, which is why you can finish a hard conversation instead of leaving it, sit through a slow afternoon without picking a fight with it, and leave a message unanswered for a few hours without composing a second one.

It is worth knowing what this capacity buys you, because it tends to be invisible to the person who has it. It is why you can hear criticism to the end, and why a bad hour does not turn into a bad decision. And in a relationship it is often the quiet thing that lets the other person have a hard feeling of their own without you rushing to fix it, argue with it or leave the room.

Where it can still slip

A low score describes your usual month, not every month. Tolerance is partly a state. It shrinks with poor sleep, illness, hunger, a stretch of pressure at work, or a run of bad news that has nothing to do with the moment in front of you. If you recognize yourself here but also remember a recent week where everything got to you, both can be true.

There is one more thing to check. A low score can also come from a life that currently asks very little of you, or from steering around discomfort so well that it rarely arrives. If you avoid the hard situations rather than sit through them, the experiential avoidance test is the better read.

What to do next

Keep the gap, and notice what widens it. For most people it is something physical and boring: sleep, food, a walk before the difficult call. Knowing your own list means you can protect it before a hard week rather than after one.

Use the capacity for other people. When your partner is the one who cannot wait, cannot sit still, or needs the feeling gone now, your steadiness is most useful as company rather than as a lecture. Staying near someone while they are uncomfortable, without fixing it, is one of the more generous things a person can do.

If a particular situation still gets past you, Lovon is there to talk it through before you act on it.
