What this means

At this score the third group of questions is usually doing the work. Grief has moved out of the emotional part of your life and into the practical one. Sleep is wrong. Food is either forgotten or automatic. Work takes twice as long because your attention will not stay anywhere. Invitations go unanswered because being looked at is exhausting.

Two things are worth separating here. The first is load. Grief is physically expensive, and the fog, the clumsiness, the word that goes missing mid sentence, the phone left in the fridge, none of that is you falling apart. It is what happens when a large share of your processing is occupied and your sleep is broken. It is a well recognized part of grieving, and for most people it eases as sleep and load improve.

The second is narrowing. When the effort of everything goes up, the costliest things get dropped first, and those are usually the ones that would help: people, movement, daylight, eating properly. Nobody decides to do this. It happens one declined invitation at a time, and the result is a smaller life that gives grief more room rather than less.

A score here is not a diagnosis and it is not proof you are grieving wrong. Time on its own does not settle the question either. Being here a year in is not a failure, and being here three weeks in is not a crisis. What matters is direction: whether the circle has been shrinking for months, or whether it is starting, slowly and unevenly, to widen again.

What to do next

Work on the floor rather than on the feelings. Anchor three things: roughly when you get up, one real meal, and some time outdoors each day. Next to what happened they sound insultingly small. They are also what makes everything else fractionally possible, and none of them require you to feel any particular way first.

Let somebody do one specific job. The people around you want to help and cannot guess. Naming an actual task, a shop run, a form, a lift, a Tuesday evening, works far better than telling them you are managing.

Put one repeating thing in the week where other people are present and nothing is required of you socially. Presence comes first. Conversation comes later, and closeness after that.

If sleep has been broken for weeks, or you have lost a noticeable amount of weight, that is a reason to see a doctor. Not because grief is an illness, but because a body running on empty makes all of this heavier, and that part is treatable.

  • What is inhibited grief?

Inhibited grief is grief that never gets out. The loss happened, you kept functioning, and the feeling stayed sealed…

The items on this check are written by Lovon around the three parts described above. It is not a validated grief scale, it does not reproduce the Inventory of Complicated Grief, the Prolonged Grief scales or any other copyrighted instrument, and it is not scored against one.

There are no clinical norms behind the bands. They are ranges for reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis. A high score does not mean you are grieving wrongly, and the amount of time that has passed does not by itself make any score right or wrong.

Grief and depression overlap and can feel identical from the inside. If most days for weeks have been low, if you have lost interest in everything rather than in most things, or if sleep and appetite have changed and stayed changed, that is worth a conversation with a doctor. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or of not wanting to be here, please speak to a doctor, a therapist or someone close to you now rather than waiting.
