What this means

All three parts are raised in your answers: when the voice speaks, how it talks and what it gets you to do. The critic talks often, talks harshly, and has a strong say in what you do. But the most important thing here is something the test can only hint at: the voice has usually stopped sounding like a voice. It sounds like a description. You are not hearing "you are useless". You are simply aware that you are useless, the way you are aware that it is raining.

Psychologists call this fusion, and it is the mechanism this result describes. When a thought is heard as a thought, you can disagree with it. When it is heard as the narrator of your life, there is nothing to disagree with, so reassurance slides off and good news gets explained away as luck, politeness or a mistake. A partner telling you that you are wonderful can even make it worse, because now you have to account for the gap.

At this level the commentary also stops needing a trigger. It runs on neutral days and good days, in the shower, while you are trying to rest. Your answers about what you skip and redo are high too, which means the voice is shaping how big your life gets: what you try, who you let close, what you ask for.

Please read this part

A critic this loud often travels with a low, flat mood, and the two feed each other closely enough to be hard to tell apart from the inside. If the flatness has been there for more than a couple of weeks, or your sleep, appetite or interest in things has changed, that is worth raising with a doctor. If the voice has started saying that people would be better off without you, or pushing you toward hurting yourself, please do not wait. In the US you can call or text 988 at any hour, and if you are in danger right now, call 911.

What to do next

The honest recommendation is that this is not one to tackle alone. Working with a therapist is the most direct route, because separating yourself from a voice like this is exactly the kind of work therapy does well.

In the meantime, one small move helps more than it sounds. Put a few words in front of the voice's sentences: "I am having the thought that..." So "I am useless" becomes "I am having the thought that I am useless." It does not argue. It just puts the voice back where it belongs, as something you hear rather than something you are.

Lovon is there to talk to at any hour, including the ones where this is loudest. It is support alongside a doctor or therapist, not instead of one.

  • Will I ever find love?

No one can honestly promise you will. What is true is that the odds are not fixed at birth and not decided by your last…

The items on this test are written by Lovon around the construct of self-criticism. It does not reproduce any published questionnaire or copyrighted measure.

There are no clinical norms behind the results. They are ways of reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

If a harsh inner voice sits alongside a low, flat mood that has lasted for weeks, that combination is worth a conversation with a doctor. If it turns into thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the US.
