What this means

Pull, what the voice gets you to do, stands out in your answers. The critic has moved from commentary to strategy. It does most of its talking before anything has happened. Before the message is sent, before the party, before you raise your hand, it has already told you how this will go and how you will look. The logic is protective: if you say the worst thing about yourself first, nobody else can surprise you with it.

You can usually hear this one out loud. "Sorry, this is probably a stupid question." "I know I look terrible today." "It is rough, I threw it together." Each line is the critic getting in first, and each one teaches the people around you to hear what follows as smaller than it is.

The other output, especially if your skipping answers ran high, is avoidance. The voice predicts embarrassment with total confidence, so you skip the class, decline the invitation, keep the idea to yourself in the meeting and then hear someone else say a weaker version of it ten minutes later. The prediction is never tested, which means it never loses. That is why this pattern tends to grow. Every skipped thing is a vote of confidence in the critic.

In relationships it shows up as rehearsal. You run a conversation three times before having it, mostly playing the other person's harshest possible reply, and by the time you speak you are either braced for a fight that was never coming or have decided the thing is not worth raising at all.

How this differs from fear of other people

It can look like rejection sensitivity, and the two overlap. The difference is where the forecast comes from. Here it comes from your own commentary about yourself, not from reading other people's faces for signs of disapproval. If the second sounds more like you, the rejection sensitivity test is the closer page. The insecurity test scores getting your flaws in first too, as part of feeling unsure of your place with people.

What to do next

Drop the opening apology for two weeks. Send the message without "sorry if this is dumb", ask the question without the disclaimer, and watch what actually comes back.

Then test one prediction a week on purpose. Pick something the voice is sure will go badly and that is small enough to survive: a comment in a meeting, a message to a friend you have not seen in a while, going to the thing alone. Write down what the critic forecast and what happened. A written record is the one thing this kind of critic cannot argue with.

If you would like to rehearse a conversation once rather than ten times, Lovon is a place to do that.

The items on this test are written by Lovon around the construct of self-criticism. It does not reproduce any published questionnaire or copyrighted measure.

There are no clinical norms behind the results. They are ways of reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

If a harsh inner voice sits alongside a low, flat mood that has lasted for weeks, that combination is worth a conversation with a doctor. If it turns into thoughts of hurting yourself, call or text 988 in the US.
