What this means

All three parts of respect run low in your answers. Your opinion rarely changes what happens. Your no gets pushed, your privacy and time come at a cost, and requests you have made are ignored. And the way your partner talks to you and about you includes mockery, names or contempt for what you care about.

Any one of these is worth a serious conversation. All three together, in the same month, describe a relationship in which your say, your limits and your standing are all being worn down at once. That is more than a respect problem. Overriding, monitoring and humiliating, taken together, are common features of controlling relationships, and relationship advocates would want to look at this closely.

This is not a verdict on your partner or a prediction of what will happen. A quiz cannot see your relationship. It is a reason to take what you described seriously.

Before anything else

Ask yourself one question honestly: are you afraid of how your partner will react if you disagree, say no or leave? If the answer is yes, or sometimes, safety comes before any advice about communication.

In the US, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, and you can text START to 88788. Love Is Respect, for people in dating relationships, is 1-866-331-9474. Calls are confidential, and you do not need to be sure that what is happening counts as abuse. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

What to do next

Tell one person you trust what you answered here. Patterns like this tend to grow in isolation and look different once someone outside hears them.

Keep a private record, somewhere your partner cannot see it, of specific incidents and dates. It helps you trust your own memory, and it helps any professional you talk to.

If you are not afraid and you both want things to change, this is the result where outside help matters most. A counselor who knows about controlling dynamics is a better first step than joint couples sessions, which can be unsafe when one person holds most of the power.

The twelve items on this test are written by Lovon around the three parts of respect described above. This is not a published relationship or abuse assessment, and it does not reproduce any of them.

There are no clinical norms behind the results. They describe which part of respect your answers put lowest, not where you sit against other couples, and nothing here is a diagnosis of you, your partner or the relationship.

Your answers describe one side of a two-person relationship. If you are afraid of your partner, in the US you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or text START to 88788.
