What this means

Your answers lean most toward the second group: the defenses that admit a feeling exists and then take the weight out of it. A sensible reason why it did not matter. A clear, almost clinical account of what happened that leaves out what it was like. "It's not a big deal," said about something you are still turning over four days later.

These have names too. Rationalization is finding a respectable reason for something whose real reason is harder to look at, like deciding you never wanted the job after you did not get it. Intellectualization is moving a painful event into the language of ideas, so you can talk about attachment for twenty minutes without once saying you felt left. Minimizing is shrinking the thing until it fits.

This is the quietest of the three groups and the one most often mistaken for good adjustment. You stay calm, you sound reasonable, you get on with things. That is what separates it from pushing a feeling away. Here you know the feeling is there. It just never gets to land.

How it shows up from the outside

Partners tend to describe it the same way: talking to you about something emotional feels like talking to a very good lawyer. Every point gets an answer, and none of the answers is the one they were looking for, which was some sign that it touched you. You can leave a conversation thinking it went well while they leave it lonelier than they came in.

It has a cost for you as well. Feelings that are explained rather than felt tend to come back, because an explanation does not finish them. The sour grapes need tasting again every time the subject comes up.

What to do next

Practice one sentence with no reason in it. Not "I was upset, but I understand why they did it." Just "I was upset." Then stop. The second half of the first version is the defense, and you will feel the pull to add it.

When you notice yourself explaining the psychology of something painful, swap one analytical sentence for one physical one. Instead of describing the dynamic, describe what your body did when it happened. It sounds small. It is the difference between talking about the feeling and letting it into the room.

And let a disappointment stay a disappointment for a full day before you decide what it means. A lot of what rationalizing protects you from is about twenty-four hours long.

If you can find a feeling in your body more easily than in words, the alexithymia test looks at exactly that. Lovon is there if you want to say the unexplained version out loud first.

The items on this test are written by Lovon around the idea of grouping defenses by what they do. This is not the Defense Style Questionnaire or any clinician-rated defense system, and it does not reproduce any published measure.

There are no clinical norms behind the results. They are a way of reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

If hard feelings have been sitting alongside a low, flat mood for weeks, or you are relying on drinking or anything else to get through, that is worth a conversation with a doctor.
