What this means

The sign of hypermasculinity that runs highest in your answers is contempt for softness. Some or all of what follows will fit. Men who cry, talk about feelings or do the caring work at home get mocked. Women or partners get discussed with friends as scores, conquests or a question of who is in charge. And when your partner says something you did hurt them, the answer is that they are too sensitive.

This rarely feels like contempt from the inside. It feels like humor, or realism, or just how men talk. Its job is defensive. If softness is ridiculous, nobody can expect it from you, and you never have to risk it yourself. Mocking it in other people is the cheapest way to keep it out of your own life.

What it costs

The first cost lands on your partner. Hearing that you are too sensitive every time you say you are hurt teaches a person to stop saying it. What they feel does not go away. It goes quiet and comes back later as distance, resentment or an exit you did not see coming. And the way you talk about partners with friends tends to reach them eventually, which changes how safe they feel with you.

The second cost lands on you. Contempt for softness works like a wall, and walls keep things in as well as out. Men who live behind this one often have nobody to tell when something goes badly wrong, such as a health scare, a breakup or a death. The friends they have are the ones they joke with, and the jokes leave no room for that conversation.

Where fragile masculinity comes in

Fragile masculinity is the sense that manhood can be lost and so has to be defended. Contempt is one of its most common defenses. Loudly distancing yourself from anything that might look soft protects a sense of being a man that feels like it could slip. Steady confidence does not need that distance.

How this differs from nearby tests

The dark triad test measures callousness as a general trait, aimed at anyone. What this result picks up is narrower and learned: contempt aimed at softness in particular. The toxic masculinity test looks at the rules you run on yourself and at home. This one is about policing feelings in other people.

What to do next

Next time your partner says they are hurt, swap "you are too sensitive" for "tell me what happened", and then listen to the end.

Drop one joke. The next time the group mocks a man for being soft, do not join in, and notice that nothing bad happens to you.

If you want to practice saying something real without a joke to hide behind, Lovon is somewhere to try it first.

The twelve items on this test are written by Lovon around the three signs described above. It is not a published research questionnaire and it does not reproduce one.

There are no clinical norms behind the five results. They describe which sign leads in your answers, not where you sit against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

If anyone at home is afraid of you, or you have hurt a partner or a child, talk to a professional rather than relying on a self-test. If low mood or heavy drinking has been part of most weeks lately, that is worth raising with a doctor.
