What this means

None of the three boundaries runs thin in your answers. With people, you keep new acquaintances at a polite distance until they have earned more, and your opinions come home with you unchanged after a long conversation. Inside, dreams fade soon after you wake, and you can tell at once what happened and what you only imagined. Around time and order, your days have a shape, work has an end, and plans get followed.

That is the thick end of the thin thick boundaries dimension. It describes how separate you keep things, not how kind, creative or emotional you are. If most of your answers were Rarely or Sometimes rather than Never, you sit nearer the middle, and this is still the result that fits best: none of your lines blurs often.

Where thick boundaries help

Separation is a skill. It lets you focus on one task while another worry waits its turn, leave a bad meeting at the office, and stay steady when people around you are not. Others tend to find you reliable, because what you said on Monday still holds on Friday. In a crisis you are often the one who can think.

Where they can cost you

The same walls that keep chaos out can keep useful signals out too. Feelings can stay in their box until they are loud enough to break it, so stress may show up as a stiff neck or a short temper before it shows up as a thought. Change can feel more disruptive to you than to other people, because it moves lines you rely on.

In relationships, thick-boundaried people sometimes read thinner partners as chaotic, oversharing or dramatic, and get read in return as cold or closed. Neither reading is quite fair. It is two ways of organizing experience meeting each other.

What to do next

Keep the structure, and add one door. Once a week, spend ten minutes writing whatever comes, without a plan or a point, or ask someone close what they noticed about you this week and just listen.

Check in with your body before your mind. If you notice tension, ask what it would say if it could talk. The answer is often a feeling you filed away.

If you live with someone whose boundaries are thinner, name the difference out loud. "I need a plan, you need room to change it" is easier to negotiate than a fight about who is unreasonable.

The boundaries test measures something different, the limits you set with people, so a thick result here says nothing about how easily you say no. And when something does get through your walls and you would rather think it over with someone, Lovon is there to talk it through.

  • Why do I have no friends?

Usually nothing is wrong with you. Adult friendship runs on proximity and repetition, and most people lose both at once…

The twelve items on this test are written by Lovon around the idea of thin and thick boundaries described above. It is not the Boundary Questionnaire or any of its short forms, and it does not reproduce their items or scoring.

There are no clinical norms behind the results. The cut-offs are points for reading your own answers back, not percentiles against a population, and nothing here is a diagnosis.

Very vivid dreams, frequent nightmares, losing track of time or finding it hard to tell what is real are worth raising with a doctor if they last or get in the way of your life.
