What this means

What you described splits in an uncomfortable way. Some of the repair conditions are there. What is missing is you — the part of you that wanted them. You can picture staying and you cannot picture wanting to. The flinch has not gone. The evening a year from now is something you can imagine surviving rather than looking forward to.

That is worth taking seriously, because rebuilding after an affair does not run on evidence alone. It runs on some remaining pull toward the person. Without it, what you get is a long project of proving things to someone whose body has already left the room.

Forgiving and reconciling are two different decisions

These get treated as one thing and they are not. Forgiveness is something that happens inside you: the slow release of the grip this has on your days, the point where you stop needing them to hurt in order for you to be okay. Reconciliation is a joint construction project with schedules and hard conversations and years attached.

You can do the first without the second. People do it all the time. You can arrive somewhere genuinely unbitter about a person you are never going to share a bed with again. You can also reconcile without ever really forgiving, which is the more common and much worse outcome — the marriage that continues with a permanent tab open.

Nothing here is a verdict. This is a mirror, not a ruling, and it is not permission to leave or an instruction to stay. It is a description of what you told it, which is that the conditions may be present and the wanting is not.

What to do this week

Say the true version out loud to someone. Not to them yet, necessarily — to a friend, a therapist, a voice memo at a red light. Something like: "I think he is doing the work. I do not think I want him anymore." Most people have been circling that sentence for weeks without ever letting it finish, and it changes what you are actually deciding.

Separate the two questions on paper. One page: can this be rebuilt. Another page: do I want to be the person rebuilding it. They have different answers and mixing them is what keeps the loop going at 2am.

Give the wanting a real window before you call it. Six or eight weeks, with the pressure off, no performance of affection required from either of you. Numbness right after discovery is extremely common and does sometimes lift. If it has not moved at all by then, that is information rather than a failure of effort. If you find yourself already grieving the relationship while you are still inside it, am I over my ex is a strange but useful thing to read early, because it names what that particular ache is.

When to get help

A therapist of your own is more useful than couples work at this stage, because the open question is yours rather than shared. And if the flatness has spread past the relationship — food, sleep, the things you used to like, the sense that any of it is worth doing — treat that as its own problem and take it to someone licensed. If you find yourself thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
