What this means

What you described has the pieces that actually matter after infidelity, and they show up together far less often than the internet suggests. The account of what happened has held its shape every time you have gone back to it. Contact with the other person ended in a way you can point at rather than take on faith. When you ask a question at a bad hour, you get an answer instead of a sigh. They are doing something about it that they came up with themselves, rather than the minimum you asked for. And somewhere underneath the anger, you can still picture wanting them.

That combination is roughly what couples therapists mean when they say a relationship can come back from an affair. It does not mean it will. It means the door is not painted on the wall.

What this is not

This is not a verdict, and it is not permission. A quiz cannot tell you to stay, and nothing here says you owe someone two more years because they handled the aftermath decently. Handling it decently is the price of admission, not a favor to you. You can have every condition on this list sitting in front of you and still decide you do not want to spend the next stretch of your life rebuilding something you did not break. That choice is yours and it stays yours.

It is also not proof that you have the whole story. Four weeks of a consistent account is weaker evidence than six months of one. The reason this takes as long as it does is that trust is not restored by a conversation. It is restored by a long, boring stretch in which nothing new surfaces.

What to do this week

Ask for one specific thing instead of a feeling. Be more open cannot be checked off by anyone. Something like: "For the next three months I want to know where you are on Thursday nights, and I want you to tell me before I ask." Concrete requests are fairer to both of you, because they can actually be met.

Agree out loud on how questions get handled. The most common way a promising repair goes wrong is that the hurt partner starts swallowing questions to keep the house calm, and the resentment goes underground instead of away. Try saying it plainly: "I am going to have questions for a while. I need you to answer them without making me feel like the problem for asking."

Decide what you are not deciding yet. Pick a date about six weeks out to check in with yourself, so you are not relitigating the entire relationship every night at midnight. If the same conversation keeps collapsing into the same fight, writing out what you want to say beforehand with the conflict script builder makes it less likely that the hour gets spent defending your tone instead of talking about what happened.

When to get help

Affair recovery is one of the things couples therapy is genuinely good at, and going early is cheaper than going after a year of silent scorekeeping. Watch your own side too: your sleep, your appetite, the images that arrive uninvited. If those are still running your days two months from now, that is worth taking to a therapist of your own. Not because you are fragile, but because that is what this does to a nervous system.
